CF is important defensively and the ratings are -

CF     85     85     60     65

Finding CFers from my experience is a pain. I usually end up putting a more defensive player out there. In Ruth I didn't have many defensive options, so I sucked it up and put this guy out there -

Bo Seay https://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=6807302

With a 77 range and 76 glove, I thought he'd be really bad, but he's been decent, leading all CFs in RF and putouts, and putting up a decent .985 F%.

I'm not sure how this can be. Tuscon is a band box. Add to that when I see this guy  - Vinny Yishii https://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerRatings.aspx?pid=6176732, he is about the same with range/glove and he's getting destroyed out there. Maybe Seay is just having a career year. IDK.

Seay seems like an extreme outlier. But I am starting to think a 85/80/60/60 guy with a good bat won't kill me. And a 80/75/80/75 guy with a very good bat would probably be a plus overall.

Thoughts?

If Tucson really is small, then wouldn't that make it easier for a low range to cover all of the ground and get to more batted balls? I never thought the sim was that nuanced, but who knows.

It isn't.

Well, it isn't if CS is to be believed.  They've said so several times.   The numbers that matter are 1B/2B/3B/LF HR/RF HR.

That is what I thought too, but it is a fun fiction to fit sjpoker's numbers.

There are other factors.   Pitching staff GB is one.  And, of course, one season is a pretty SSS.    I know some of my C in RF would produce 24 negative plays in one season and 11 the next.

If the range is important for CF is having an 80 glove just as important?

IDK. I see some CFs doing just fine with under an 85 glove. But almost all have the 85+ range and compensate with good arms.

A poor glove in CF leads to more dropped balls, which are often 2 base errors for a CFer.

FYI . . . one of the "bugs" in the game engine is that OFers do not make throwing errors, so all errors listed for outfielders are dropped balls. Makes it easier to correlate CF glove ratings to errors, since you don't have to differentiate between different kinds of errors (they're all dropped balls = glove).

So at the end of Ruth 39 my CF Bo Seay led in Range factor and was top 10-15 in Fld%

Here's his stats -

What gives? This guy wasn't even close to the ratings I normally aim for. But the guy seemed decent. What am I missing in the numbers here?

Tied for last in GB/FB ratio.

Ah makes sense. Since my staff was saving the worms, he was getting a lot of opportunities.
