And yet, you can still get a high quality ML coach for your AAA or lower team--if you are willing to pay.
Here's how I do it:
1. Sometimes you have a stable full of high quality pitching or hitting prospects at the AAA level. Rather than stick a dud remaining coach in the with a 66 pitching rating I go for the gold. Having already budgeted about $2.5M for my AAA pitching slot (because this has to be planned at budget time to get a quality coach to come to AAA) on the very last day I find the best pitching coach still available for about $1.7M asking price.
2. I go to the coach and negotiate with him, giving his about half again what he is asking for. I do this on the last day of hiring about 3-4 cycles before the end of coaching hires. I offer the ML pitching coach $2.5M BUT lower his level to AAA--which you can do in the negotiating area. This guy may be as good as an 83 or so--sometimes higher depending on your competition.
3. First time out he will laugh in your face telling you how much you are insulting him. Just because he insults you don't be put off. As long as he doesn't say someone else is paying him more then submit the same bid a second time. Second time out he may do the same.
4. By the third time he may well say he'll think about it. This means he will coach your AAA team if a ML bid doesn't come along.
5. If no one signs this guy to a ML contract which, by the final day is less likely, you will get your quality AAA pitching coach--but you ail have paid him a bonus to stoop to that level.
6. There may be other ways of doing this. This is the method that has worked for me.
