Curt Flood Free Agency League- Inaugural Season (1970)
****************************************************************************
16 Teams (No DH).
$70 million Budget (of Auction Money – not WIS salary prices)
* Each season the Salary Cap will go up $1 million (so $80 mil in 1980, ect.)
It’s 1970-- the Supreme Court ruled in FAVOR of Curt Flood vs. MLB in his fall of 1969 bid to reject a trade from the Cardinals to the Phillies & become a Free Agent to sign with whatever team he chose. The Supreme Court ruling overrides Baseball’s eternal “Reserve Clause” where ownership always had rights over the players -- instead instantly granting all current MLB Players Free Agency.
16 teams will each have $70 million to bid on the services of all 1970 Players in the WIS database via Silent Auction sitemail. I’ll divvy up & space out 15 days worth of players for bid alphabetically be position. Bids can be made in any amount, in $100-K increments. So the League minimum salary will be $100,000. I will send my bids the night before to the first 3 owners that sign up) Contact Lengths will be from 1 to 5 years. Either extend the contract each year up to 5 years, or cut whomever you want going into the next season. After a max 5-year Contract expires, that player becomes a Free Agent. Traded Players Contracts are the same amounts & time duration as the original price paid.
(AAA) Sign & Roster up to 40 players. Teams that run out of money before they sign a full 40-man Roster will be able to get to 40 players via a (AAA) random Draft to fill out their 40-man roster at the end of the auction, but these players will be one-year signings only. I’ll keep a detailed Accounting of all Teams Current Rosters & Salaries in the Forums.
