My question is: when his contract is up, how will it work? Will be be arbitration eligible? Will he be a free agent? I've never had a player like this that was signed LT but would have <5years ML experience at the end of the deal.

If I'm reading this correctly, he will still be under 3 years service time when the current deal is up. If that's correct and he's on the 40, he will be renewed at 500k then become arb-el the next season.
