I would like my team to play great defense and be able to hit from the perimeter. Nichols was only targeted to be an off the bench scorer, but when I was handed this team, 4 senior Point Guards left the next season. That hurt.
A few things:
1. I keep hearing newish coaches say "I recruited these players because I lost 3 point guards or I lost 3 big men." Stop that. You need to take control of your team and how it is constructed. Just because your lost 4 senior PGs in one class doesn't mean you have to replace them with four freshmen guards or even four guards. Your team was coached by a SIM for 15 seasons before you showed up. Are you really going to let the SIM dictate your class composition?
Right now, all of your young players are guards and your seniors/juniors are big men. So in two years, you'll have a bunch of experienced guards and rookie big men and you won't be able to figure out why you can't rebound or score inside. You won't be able to win with a teeter-totter team.
Put together a spreadsheet similar to
this one. Figure out what your team will look like in 4 years. Get your team off this cycle of being completely unbalanced.
2. You want to play great defense, but you aren't recruiting great defenders. You need to really step your recruiting of great defenders.
3. You want to be able to hit from the perimeter and your guards have good PER ratings. So why aren't they taking those shots?
