Players Leaving Due to Playing Time Issues... Topic

I have two players on my Montana State team who have complained and started to lose WE.  I've been playing long enough to know theres a pretty good chance of a player transferring in the offseason after complaining (can you lose two in one year?), and I was wondering how this could affect my coaching reputation.  I realize that for the most part coach reputation is useless, so normally I wouldn't care about potentially dropping from an A+ to A-.  However after this season I will be looking to change jobs to a BCS conference school, so I am actually concerned about this.  I had a player leave last season and stayed at an A+ reputation, however I am worried that if one or both of these players leave that could drop to an A-, making me ineligible for a BCS gig.

The players complaining were pushed to the back of the depth chart after signing a couple of better freshman in the offseason, and I have no intention on giving them any more time.  I've been building for this season for a couple years, and don't want to sacrifice anything just to appease these bums.

Cliffs:
1. Can more than one player transfer in the same offseason due to playing time issues?
2. If so, could this cause my reputation to drop from an A+ to A-?  Keep in mind I had a player transfer last offseason, so I may already be at a "low" A+.
3. Do all BCS jobs require at least an A reputation?

Thanks!

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. I dunno.

Players leaving because of playing time cause your reputation to drop? I know your reputation drops if you made a minutes promise and the guy leaves because you didn't live up to it, but I hadn't noticed that it changed if the players in question simply left of their own accord.

Q: What can cause my reputation to change and how long does it take to recover?
A: There are several actions that can affect your reputation:

- you are investigated for recruiting violations
- you rescind a player's scholarship
- you break promises
- a player quits
- a player is declared academically ineligible

Beyond that, as you get closer to a spotless reputation (A+), the longer it takes to get there.

Q: What do schools look for when they are

hiring coaches? How can I move up?
A:

When you browse the list of job openings, each one will have a brief bit of advice from your agent, which will give you an indication of whether you're qualified.

There are multiple factors that a school uses to decide whether to accept your application, including but not limited to (and not necessarily in this order):

  • Overall Experience
  • Recent Success (going back at most 10 seasons)
  • Reputation
  • Loyalty

I think it drops either way. Its possible that if only one player quits occasionally and you never have  kids flunk or anything else maybe you never notice the drop, but 2 kids in one season and one last might be noticeable.

OP, it does seem that reputation is a factor. I do think most BCS schools will be more discerning than some others so it could become an issue. You might want to figure out a way to make those kids happy sometime. There's probably a way to game that somewhat based on the timing of their email complaining to their followup email really complaining since I've been told by CS that the kid looks for his situation to improve specifically over that period...

(*NOTE - that list of things that cause a hit to reputation includes recruiting violations which refers to booster gifts which were something that D2 and D1 coaches could use to "cheat" to recruit players and have been removed from HD for years, so who knows how accurate any of this is...)

Consider giving those guys some starts against the really bad teams on your schedule

So far, my experience has been, they whine, they complain and they tell you they will leave if they do not get more playing time. But I have never saw a player leave... They drop 3 to 7 pts of WE and that's about it.

Is it the same with D1?

some players will leave if not given playing time they expect as SO or JR.  Not all who whine leave, but some do .

Sometimes you wish a player would leave - those never do

Oh no, they leave all the time.  Even if you haven't seen it at the lower levels it happens there too.

I have a somewhat related question. Forgive me if the answer is on the boards somewhere. I was unable to find an answer.

If a player does transfer due to playing time (no broken promise) does the coach get extra scholarship money for recruiting or is that amount based on the number of graduating seniors?

if the player transfers for any reason you DO get the scholarship money - unless you already have reached the max money for 6 scholarships.

Excellent. So the only negative, if you don't mind losing the player, is a possible blemish on your reputation?

correct, and for one player it is not a huge penalty.

Yes

However if it makes you better in the long run, starve them as far as my two cents are worth! Use the money from their leaving, get better players and restore reputation faster! I cannot keep players that are not part of my long term goals...."Old Bandaid theory" I call it....Pull it off quick so you do not feel the pain as long!

I like the band aid theory! I am going to try to do that with my Hawaii team. I recruited a PG my first year that had super low beginning stats, but lots of potential. Entering the sophomore year, after a redshirt freshman season, he is worse than a freshman I just signed, and I am going to try to get rid of him. He has like 19 defense now. I can't see him ever being a viable option at D1. Not sure what I thought he was going to become, but I did have hopes that he would improve way faster.
