Coaching South Carolina in RUPP
I know there are a lot of threads and I have pulled and favorited a bunch regarding tracking effort, etc. This is my first time at a B level D1 school Big 6 school. I have a few questions which I will post here but if you would like to share some wisdom privately instead, please site mail me.

1. How high a recruit can I go after? I am thinking 10-20 at a position, maybe top 50 overall? This obviously depends on funds available as well. Is the best way to check is to call the coach?

2. At what point do I start recruiting more nationally? Should you wait until your an A school to battle for top recruits?

3. Lots of opinions out there on this but whats a good way to factor in School and coach prestige. Anyone have a good way?

1. I can't remember - are all recruits "available" at B? (Available meaning open to effort - that doesn't mean you're gonna have a chance in hell to sign certain ones - but mostly because someone else will take them...)

2. This is the wrong way to think about recruiting IMO. Both parts of question.

a. nationally: You should always be recruiting where you can either gain an advantage, or neutralize the advantages of your opponent. Assume every target is attractive to others (if they aren't why the hell would you want them in the first place). It is important to try to construct your recruiting plan such that you are able to minimize threats and defend against attacks as much as possible. If you can do so nationally or at a distance for whatever reason, great.

b. battling: Recruiting the highest level players you can is a big part of one popular way to "succeed" in HD. It is tough at any level, even A++++ (ask gillispie how things went at KU in Tark this year ) Learning what schools you can battle and when is a big thing - more than I could try to express in a response here, and more than I'd have time for individually personally, but I recommend seeking a tutor familiar with high D1 recruiting for some personal advice if possible...avoiding battles is generally best (GENERALLY) and recognizing which battles are win-able and which aren't is paramount to success...

3. I don't understand this question.

I am not sure I actually gave you any useful information, and perhaps you've received some sitemails in response to this already, but it looked awful lonely so I wanted to say something at least...

Thanks Dacj501, you shared a lot. As for Q3, it was centered around factoring in any impact it might have that I am a B school but someone else is B+ for example.

Ah...it's hard to judge exactly where in the letter grade the numeric value falls...look at baseline, and the last few seasons and the trend, look at results for this B if the last couple were also B for instance - is this season better or worse?

And then assume that the difference is a bad as it could be for purposes of comparing effort anyway just in case :)

But you should always determine a range based on the possible prestige variance, the best case and worst case, and then what you guess it really is...if you track this stuff and find folks willing to share data after you can dial in your guesstimating over time...
