how many walkons before you get lower growth? Topic

Ok, I searched and found topics on walkons, all old.  The Guide says don't worry about taking "a walk-on or two", but in the current engine, is there any downside to taking two?  I can't find the thread, but thought I read recently that any more than one walk-on will slow the growth of other players.

So, one or two walkons ok?

there's no penalty for two. past that there is a penalty, but most likely with that few players it won't be that bad because your guys should be getting all that PT to make up for it

Perfect, thanks bd.  Class sizes have finally caught up with me, and it's hard to find guys with 1 or even 2 years left that are a reasonable distance.

I know what you mean, probably one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that taking a walk-on is about 100X better than taking a guy that can't help you just to avoid the penalty.

If you have 1-2 walk-ons you will be able to spend more money on better recruits. If you have 12 walk-ons you will lose every game by 100.

ive taken 4 walkons a lot of times and you don't really get a big hit on the practice plan. maybe instead of +8 a guy is +7, but its not like you are going to see improvement cut in half, or anything like it.

my rule of thumb is this - totally ignore the practice hit, and make your decision that way. as was mentioned, its much better to have a walkon play (or usually, not play, at least not more than a couple end of game blowout minutes) in place of a ****** freshman for 1 season - than to sign a guy who cant compete and be stuck with him for 4. now, at some point, a lot of walkons will hurt your team - if you take 5, you have to run with 7 men, and that is going to hurt your season. still, its often better to take 5 than to load up with guys who suck. but really, you can take 2 with ZERO concern, 3 with VERY LITTLE impact, and even 4 is not that big of a deal. the bigger deal is often to class sizes and such, than it is to the performance of your team, that season. maybe your s16 type team only makes the 2nd round. but you can get over that - what you cant get over is getting 2 crappy FR so you can still make that s16 and then sucking for 3 the next 3 seasons.

Is this walkons only or do bad scholarship players also hurt growth. I know you don't want bad players, but i have an idea I want to try if bad scholly players do not slow down growth.

If the player is on scholarship, whether they're a disaster or all-star is irrelevant. The game is strictly looking at scholarship player numbers when determining if there is a development penalty for a team. A lot of times, coaches will grab a "bad" scholarship player to fill out their roster because it allows them to maintain their rollover cash for the next season (which they lose with a walk-on).
