What's the best way to analyze offensive efficiency? I used to look at FG% to decide how to do distribution, but now I don't think that's right. I think you should look at points/offensive%. Because that accounts for free throws, and 3 pointers being worth more. Thoughts?

You could also look at points/minute for a quick easy metric, or use the more complex efficiency formula that looks at Points, FGA, TO's, ORs and FTA. Used to have it programmed into a spreadsheet so I just had to update from the box scores each night and it would automatically calculate for me. Lost it during the great hard drive crash of 2016 and can't recall the exact formula (Points/FGA+TO -OR+(FTA *.4275) perhaps?). Haven't felt the need to go back to using it.

Other people just zero out distribution for exhibition games, see what the game does for distribution percentages and then tweak from there depending on performance in the non-con.

I'm still learning the game, but I've been using my Chowan team as a guinea pig for measuring individual player performance by dropping each box score into an excel. As of right now I'm using as points, assists, and offensive rebounds divided by minutes for offense; steals, blocks, rebounds, and points against (using each opponents ratings as a multiplier) divided by minutes for defense, and then turnovers as it's own separate category. I'm sure I'll end up changing the process over the next few seasons, but it's another thing for me to obsess over.

Also still learning but I've been trying to figure out a "value per minute" formula.

It's pretty simplistic but I kind of think it's grading my players properly.
PT - 1 PT
TO - negative .85 per TO
ASST - 2 PT
STL/BLK/REB - .924 per

The total is divided by minutes.

We're holding opponents to .425 from the field. Times two, for each score, is .85.
We're shooting .462. Times two is .924.

Visovsky, who I can't figure out, is the only real outlier.

I generally try to put the ball in the hands of my players who shoot the highest percentage with 50 as my median, I take away distro from people under 50% and I add distribution to players until they are down to about 50%. That is because they will then take the ball out of the hands of players who can't handle it. I want to force the ball into the hands of my best players up until the point of where they become inefficient. But this year with my RUN team I have started to change my mind a little bit, because Eric Mitchell is shooting 39.6% but his points/Off% is about the same as James Mabe who is shooting 56.2%. That is because he is shooting 3's.

I have never payed attention to any other stat besides FG% which may be a mistake. What exactly does the distribution do, I had never thought about it before.
