Play Style preferences and their numeric cutoffs? Topic

Regarding the "Play Style" preferences (perimeter offense, paint offense, fast tempo, strong defense).... I'm pretty sure I read that "strong defense" is based on points allowed per possession. Are "perimeter" and "paint" simply based on percentage of total points that come from 3-pointers, or is it more to it than that (e.g. factoring in long 2-pointers, free throws, etc)? Is "fast tempo" just determined by the total number of possessions per game?

With that in mind, anyone know what the cutoff numbers are for Very Bad/Bad/Neutral/Good/Very Good for those preferences?

oh boy, if strong defense is that, that means im harming my recruiting by scheduling tough opponents... that seems like a silly unintended consequence... if they index the opponents points per possession relative to the opponents season average, that would maybe be a little better

I think the Perimeter/Paint is simply % of points from 3PM.

I think strong defense is points per possession.

Perimeter/Paint are expressed as ratio of 3 PT FGA divided by Total FGA (does not care about how many you make, just on how many you attempted).

The cutoff points are not inverse of the other either (i.e. the percentages are different for Perimeter vs. Paint so you can be only Good for Paint but still Very Bad for Perimeter).

While I can understand why WIS (seble) wanted to implement these preferences, in practice they don't make any sense. If you don't have any perimeter presence, wouldn't you want a recruit who can shoot from the outside (instead you are penalized because you lack a perimeter shooter).

having more preferences, more texture for recruiting is a great idea in my view - I have long urged this as a way to let mid majors better compete with elites by finding guys who match their preferences.....

the actual preferences created and how they are implemented are not very good, in my opinion.

Can you be both very high on strong defense and very high on either peremeter/post?

Personally I'd prefer WIS allowing coaches to set some type of preference setting (which would lock for the season prior to recruits being generated).

If I want to be develop over many season to be a perimeter shooting program (maybe cause I run Flex), then having the ability to set that as a setting which over the course of many seasons keeps building a good score for recruits who have good perimeter traits (and has that preference as well) would be ideal.

Yes you can be VH on Strong Defense and either one of Perimeter/Paint but I think getting VH on Defense is extremely difficult (that or you need to schedule scrub teams which you just dominate over) as is getting VH on Perimeter (again yes you can chuck up a lot of 3s but you also want to win those games... at least I find it way easier to get VH on Paint than to get VH on Perimeter).

Yes, getting Very High on "Strong Defense" seems really freakin' difficult.... My Ursinus team in Crum is at "Good" for Strong Defense, yet is only allowing 39% FG%, 24 TO/g, and only about 83 points per 100 possessions. (The only real-life team in the past 10 years with a PA/100p that low is the '14-'15 Kentucky team with Karl Anthony-Towns, Devin Booker, Willie Cauley-Stein, etc). I mean.... come on....

Yeah I think it's pretty tough to get VG on defense but it's not a fair comparison to real life. I've gotten to under 80 pts/100 poss a few times but as you point out, even 83 is remarkable in real life.

The bottom or middle teams in real life aren't very good, for sure. But in HD they can be complete trash. Scoring margin in HD doesn't replicate real life. Therefore, how it SHOULD work is that the VG teams represent a certain % of teams in HD which should be relatively low. Maybe there are 30 other teams with a better defensive ppp than you, not sure. But that's how it should be calculated.
