"Wants to Play" and redshirting Topic

If a recruit has a preference of "Wants to Play", does that indicate that he's less likely to accept a redshirt once the season starts (i.e. not informed of redshirt during recruiting)? Or is there no connection between the two? (I'm specifically asking about DIII, although I'm not sure that it matters.)

Pre-3.0, successfully redshirting without informing a recruit always seemed like a toss-up. Does that new "Wants to Play" info now help determine the likelihood of that toss-up?

I don't know, but I'm about to find out! Will report back in a couple of days.

I haven't seen a player, that you did not offer time or start, refuse a red shirt as a frosh, in 3.0 that is. Even D1 to D3 take the redshirt.

I don't think that's true if they are top rated guys, Certainly hasn't worked for me.

I've had 2 DI to DII frosh refuse redshirts who weren't promised minutes or a start in 3.0.

Nathan Malone from my Pepperdine team (not highly ranked but a decent player) took a RS without complaint. He 'wanted to play' but I didn't promise him minutes obviously. It was pretty clear that he wasn't good enough to play right away on my team, but I assume he would have been an immediate player on a D-II or D-III team, so I'm sure that's part of the equation as well.

Well, to sort of answer my own question, I just successfully redshirted a guy who I hadn't informed and who had a preference of "Wants to Play" during recruiting. So I guess the two things may not be connected.

Pretty sure they are very connected in recruiting. Tell a "wants to play" recruit you're going to redshirt him and all your recruiting efforts will go to zero.

Right...... but that's not the question I asked. It was established early during beta that redshirting a recruit that wants to play during recruiting will drop your effort to zero. I asked about applying a redshirt "once the season starts" to a recruit that had said he wanted to play.

Not everyone as any idea of what went on in beta. Just sayin'.
