We are approaching the draft, which will probably start on the clock on July 10th. The long-running Real Life Progressive league is looking for a new Phillies owner, with an awe inspiring lineup (Gwynn, Cal Ripken, Rice, Strawberry, Brett, Jody Davis (21HRs), Glenn Davis (31HRs). This team is stacked at hitting, but has no picks in the first two rounds of the draft. You don't have to touch a position player for a while (other than 2B), but the pitching staff needs to be built for the future, and probably won't be strong enough in 1986 to make the playoffs, unless you trade an awesome hitter for another solid starter. Long term IPs are critical. This is a free team!
The Montreal Expos appear to be taken!
This lineup will be awesome in 1987, with a .276/.350/.452, 171HRs slash, before cutting anyone. The 1986 lineup is decent, but not great. The Expos' pitching staff is anchored by Mike Witt, who is superb in 1986, and also includes a strong Scott Sanderson. They need some more starting pitching for the long haul, and they have the 16th pick in the 1986 draft, which is one of the best ever.
This progressive league is like most, except that any player who started his career in a season is available to be drafted that season in the first round. In other words, in 1986, P Kevin Brown (career WAR of 68.5), P John Smiley (20), 1B Fred McGriff (career WAR of 52), C Terry Steinbach (28) and other "Prospects" can be drafted -- they started their careers in 1986, but were not WIS eligible. A prospect (we keep a separate draft list to make it easy) joins any players you have on the DL/IR until he is WIS eligible. If you select a prospect in the 1st round (meaning someone who first played in 1986, but wasn't WIS eligible), you can pick up your 25th player in the supplemental draft round, which occurs after the normal draft is finished. The rest is pretty standard, with 4 AAA that you select from the 1986 season, and a DH is used in the AL.
