I'm in a league where several owners have asked for their players back that I grabbed in the rule 5 draft...several seasons in a row they have said "I forgot to protect them can I get them back?" I always say "no" Am I being a giant douche or a turd sandwich? (sorry for the South Park reference)

I wouldn't do it unless they offered me a decent trade in return. Steve Spurrier once said "It's not up to me to stop me" when accused of running up the score. Translating to the R5 mistakes "It's not up to me to protect you from your neglect."
