I've called several prospects up for the end of the season. Now a new season is about to begin. What's the best way and time deadline to send them back to the minors without taking a ratings hit? Also do they have to stay on the 40 man roster now that they are up?

You may demote them anytime before the Rule 5 without a ratings hit.

In order to remove them from the 40 they'll have to be designated with waivers.

Players with options can be designated without waivers.

Ah yes, MikeT is correct. If they have options they can be sent down without designating which is how they stay on the 40 man roster.
