I signed an undrafted FA this offseason as I had some excess cash on losing out on some other FAs. He mentioned he did not want a long-term contract, but only a one-year deal. I was hoping that once I had him in my system I may be able to negotiate a long-term deal. However, he is not listed on my FA report for the next season (or any season) in my ML or minors section, nor is he in the arb report. Does anyone know where he would show up or will he be automatic FA at the end of the season? Thanks in advance.

Probably still arb eligible.

Did you mean that he was an unsigned ML FA?

I signed him to an ML deal, but I guess I’m not sure what I mean.

WTF? You gave him 5.5m? He should renew at 500k if on BL roster.

5M bonus. Way overkill, but it is done now.

The reason he isn't showing up anywhere is because he has no service time whatsoever.

He will remain with your team forever if he ever gets good enough to get put on your 40 man roster. Which you don't even have to do until he has three seasons under his belt in your system.

Once he makes it to the BL (if he ever does) he will then begin accruing BL service time and will eventually become arb eligible.

Thanks all. I went to $5m as $2.5m was not getting done. I justified it to myself as I see him as first rounder and I have a lot cap room and thought I’ll most likely be transferring a lot of payroll to prospects. Overkill but hopefully he becomes a big leaguer.

Sounds like a miscommunication.

If you are saying that 2.5M wasn't getting it done, then I think ther is something not communicated properly. Typically he would have been a FA if he was a draft pick that wasn't signed last year, and typically those players have a set demand they are asking.

If that is actually true, then 5M was not overkill. He is well worth it.

Additionally I would add that you signed him on the 1st and he has yet to make an appearance. You have him as a set up B, and I would definitely set him as a setup A to make sure he is getting in as many games as possible.

He doesn't have a draft history. I'm not sure if this shows up for players that go unsigned or not, but I found that interesting.

Players who are drafted but go unsigned show their draft history. This player is 23 which you would expect means he was a college senior last season.

So either he was one of those rare late round drops but the draft didn’t get around to him actually being drafted... or the system is now generating players who never played ball anywhere. Which I highly doubt. Imagine if a guy like this showed up in the tryout camps.

1) It's still Spring Training, and the guy has appeared.
2) I assume he was bidding against another player, which is why $2.5M wasn't working.

I'm the guy who Rohockey had to out bonus to get Prince Allen. I was up to $3M bonus and $1.5M salary, if I remember correctly. Allen was on the minor league FA list and had no career numbers or draft history, whatsoever. He just showed up. Sort of a Roy Hobbs thing. Anyway, I got beat out fair and square....but bidding as he did was definitely the thing to do. My intent was to use him with my MLB team, which is pretty competitive. I won the WS two years ago and lost in the 7th game of the NLCS last season. But my taking advantage of my 95 Pitching Coach, I was sure I could maximize his development in a hurry. He's sort of borderline MLB right now. As a Set-Up B guy, he would get 50 appearance, or so, and wouldn't kill you. My hat is off to Rohockey for stealing him from me. :)
