His career average is 5.6 innings/appearance. 3-pitch starters can be inconsistent. Your experience with him is a small sample size. Over the course of the season, you should expect to get 5-6 innings out of him, pitching better than he has.

In addition to what pschoch mentioned, defense is another thing to look at.

Your 3B is a bit sub par defensively. Your CF's glove is a bit low, especially given his hitting ratings. Your RF and 1B are also below average fielders, combining for 24 bad plays to date, that's going to contribute to a higher ERA.

Your SS has elite D though (but his backup is a LF) so that should help even out some of the stuff above.

Let's look a little further - what are his pitch settings? And what is his pull setting? I'd venture a guess those might be to blame here.

Agreed... It's a small sample size, but your only good defensive players are tired and the others are way below the ratings threshold. I don't have a problem with you CF though (He's a +17 with 4 errors).

You have this guy under contract relatively cheap for another 3 seasons. If you can address those defensive liabilities, he should put up decent numbers.

I don't think this is the issue. In all 3 out of his bad outings, he didn't make it out of the 2nd.

Honestly, the defense is a pretty easy fix. Sign a 3B that can pick it, move current 3B to RF, RF to 1B and it would be a competitive defense in most leagues. LF would still be below average, but won't kill you.

I think he already has the solution in AA with Jim Browne. He's 70+ across the board defensively and 50+ across the board offensively. He's also a 9 year pro, so there's no issue with calling him up too early.

I appreciate all the feedback guys! Couple things though. I can understand the lack of defense could be some of the issue. But he is also walking guys a lot more than I expect with above average to good control. How much does my ML coaches effect on field performance during the game?

Coaching has zero effect on game results. As for the walks, chalk it up to small sample size.

His walk totals since joining you is below career average. He's walking 2.53 per 9 in his career and 2.23 per 9 with you.

Well, there's the problem. He was fighting a nagging injury. When the performance doesn't match the ratings, I usually see an injury shortly thereafter.

Except for this minor caveat; "Bench coaches are important, because they can improve/hurt the day-to-day management operations of a minor league franchise as well as affect in-game decision making..."

It looked like you have his pitch count to high. This guy would pitch 70-80 max for me a game. He should perform like his career average with a decent def.
