Catcher ERA Difference Topic

I started a defensive catcher with 85 Pitch calling for about the first 50 games or so then brought up an offensive catcher who has started most of the games now for about 40 games. He has a 50 pitch calling, In the big league averages page when you go to change a player's position it says the average pitch calling for a catcher is 50. the 85 PC catcher has a 3.69 ERA and the 50 PC catcher has a 5.10 ERA. Is 1.5 runs difference a fluke or is that the big difference between an 85 pitch caller and a 50?

I did a thing a long time ago using 20 seasons of data. I only used catchers on the same team(my teams only, same season only) who had significant innings caught. I found the difference was about .12 in ERA for every 10 points PC. So I'd expect more like half a run for 85/50.

Thanks! That's what I was kind of thinking. I didn't mind giving up like half a run but 1.5 is too much if that was the case

kartchy - I have two catchers platooned who have almost the EXACT same rating (PC 49 vs PC 84). Over one full season, the 35 rating delta resulted in an ERA delta of 0.43... which is almost EXACTLY the difference explained by MikeT's formula of 0.125

35 PC delta/100=3.5 3.5x0.125 = 0.4375 expected ERA difference. Mathematically, we hypothesize that you should see about the same, assuming no other defense (etc etc) has changed.

Where do you see the rating for Pitch Calling? Can't find it anywhere?

Just realized this must be a HBD thing, not for us simleaguers. Sorry 'bout that...
