How would you use this guy on a zone team? Topic

Looking for some advice on how to use this guy at D1:

I run motion/zone on this team. He should be a stud for me next season, but his low REB in the zone worries me. I have a couple better rebounders I could start at the 4 and 5, but not sure if I'll get the most out of Henderson if I start him at the 3. He's got pretty good PER, so I think he can score from the 3, and I'm thinking having the flexibility to flip his DEF skills using the 3-2 or the 2-3 would be nice option too. Any thoughts?

SF in a 3-2. Off the Bench in a 2-3 with May at SF. BTW, you need more SB. That is the third most important attribute in zone in my humble opinion.

SF in a 2-3, not a 3-2. You can't use that guy in a 3-2 with that SPD rating unless the SG and PG are pegged at 100.

I wouldn't play him in the 3-2 because of the speed. In the 2-3 he's still a little lower defensively than I would like to have because of the SB.

He's the type of guy that beats up SIM teams but isn't productive against the good human teams.

In my opinion, the lack of speed hurts you more on the offensive end than it does the defensive in a 3-2. I would also hesitate to use him in a 2-3, because the lack of rebounding and shotblocking are glaring defects, even more pronounced in a zone.

I have a guy who projects to be very similar, and my plan is to use him as a 3 in a 3-2 as an upperclassman, if I don’t have a better option by then. His elite ath/defense will bolster the perimeter, and his lack of speed hurts less in zone than it would in man or straight press. But I also play triangle, which (IMO) requires less speed and ballhandling to score, so his still-green LP/per profile will usable from the 3. Not sure I would have taken him playing motion, personally. Probably wouldn’t be looking to feature him, anyway.

I think speed is more important in the 3-2 than ath for defensive purposes for the wings.

There is a “too slow” for the 3-2 3, but in the 50 range is still ok. All depends on what else he’s bringing. This guy played sf, a fair amount in a 3-2, for an Elite 8 team. The big drawback for someone like that is that you’re sacrificing a good deal of his rebounding, which was good for his position, by playing him at the 3 in a 3-2 as opposed to a 2-3. He can handle the 3-2, but in a neutral setting, is more productive in a 2-3. The opposite would be true, I think, for the kind of players we’re talking about. I suspect I’d notice the deficient rebounding and shotblocking from him in a 2-3 more than I’d notice the less than ideal speed in a 3-2.

I really try to have my 3’s have at least 70 speed in the 3-2 at high d1.

In the 2-3 I want the block/def/ath average at least 80.

Rebounding from my 3 is usually a bonus. I try to get it in the 40s in the 3-2. In the 2-3 I shoot for a little higher but honestly if you aim for high block guys the rebounding just takes care of itself. Those scores are pretty much aligned.

Thanks for the input guys. I knew this guy had some shortcomings, mostly the REB and SB, but didn't realize how much they were amplified by the zone defense. Still have high hopes for a decent season out of this Utah St team. I've got some pretty good PER firepower in my guards, just need to figure out how to approach the interior scoring and get the most out of my zone D.

Lesson learned here is to recruit players that fit the motion/zone better. This was my first go around with zone and I've got a chance to reconstruct the team next season.

He’s a solid scorer. After a second look, I think he should score real well at the 3. I just think his defense is lowere than I would like

I'd play him at the 4 in the 2-3 next to a potentially high Reb SF. He'll be really solid at the 4 offensively, won't turn the ball over too much. If he plays SF against zone teams, he might be liable to turn the ball over quite a bit if you're giving him high distro.

Sorry to sound dumb, but what are y'all referring to when you say SB?

Shotblock lol I got a lot of flack when I used that acronym before. BLK is the correct abbreviation.

Makes sense! I was racking my brain lol. Thanks

Stealing base. You also have to look at speed and technique though.
