D2 schools who are now D1 Topic

i was wondering why schools who used to be D2 schools and are now D1 have not been updated in the whatifsports world? Is this something that will change in time?

I don't think any changes will be made.
In HD there are 324 D1 teams. In real life, over 350.
Plus some of the D1 teams in HD are actually now in D3. Birmingham-Southern and Centenary to name a few.

There's only been one change that I remember when San Diego made the RL NCAA's and HD moved them up from D2.

Personally I'm a fan of the D3 schools in the game that don't exist any longer...

But not likely to change...it'd be a programming nightmare to have to change the code and the numbers every time a team moved up or down and broke off the "every league has 12 teams" symmetry the game is based upon. So poor Florida Gulf Coast is doomed to be D2 forever.

If they ever wanted to do it, I think instead of updating all the worlds, the best way would be to allow relegation. All the conferences would have 12 teams, but many (maybe not all) would be able to move into other conferences even up or down a division, replacing sims. It would mean conferences could end up wildly different between worlds, but since they are all so wildly different from real life at this point, I don’t see much down side.

I've seen this topic before, and i think it's a fair one. Most people seem to prefer to keep things the way they are. I'd prefer change, but i'm ok either way.

I don't play D1 but I do think the Power Conferences in D1 should at least be altered. Even if they stick with 12 teams in the conference, I think realignment would be a nice upgrade. And maybe leave out the 4 least notable teams of the bunch. Teams like Rutgers in the Big 10. Or Colorado State in the Pac-10 (I think they're a Pac-12 school, i'm actually not sure because they aren't a major player).

With that, comes complaining that it doesn't completely fix the problem. And the argument of "why adjust something and not fix it completely". So it's not likely going to ever happen. I just think it would be a nice change

Even if they “fix” it, it’s only going to change again in a year or 3. Better to rework the system to let users in a world “realign” as they wish.

I really love the relegation idea...net effect would probably be to pull more human owners into D1 and out of the lower divisions eventually since the relegated would most likely be Sim-run teams and the promoted the human-run clubs at the top of the lower divisions.

It's completely unrealistic compared to the real world, but could throw an element of needed excitement into the online game.

I’m good either way, I was just curious as to if it was ever considered.

The problem isn't that it doesn't completely fix the issue. The problem is that in order to put new teams into a conference, in the current format, teams have to come out. How do you tell a coach "sorry, the power conference team you've been coaching for 47 seasons is now going to be a mid-major" and not expect to lose dependable customers? In a game in which people do have to put in time (and often money) to move into certain positions - and have done so under the long-term understanding that the system is stable - it isn't going to feel "fair" to the affected users when they suddenly move the target. This is one of many areas in which trying to do a better job of emulating real life would make the game worse.

I'm guessing you used to play the NCAA Football games? I loved taking teams like Rice or North Texas and improving them enough to get an invite to the Big 12 or SEC.

I understand that it's the way the EPL works, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

I don’t remember playing a football game like that, but there was a basketball game where you could manually rearrange conferences. That’s not exactly what I’m after, because that wasn’t a multiplayer setting. EPL is definitely closer.

I think it would be cool if instead of applying for a D1 job, I could apply to take Abilene Christian (for example) to the Mountain West, and the system could replace it in D2 with the lowest prestige Sim team. There should be parameters around how far each team can rise or fall - like UNC could never be relegated out of the ACC, for example, and Virginia Tech couldn’t go lower than a mid major like A10 or CUSA; likewise, D3 schools shouldn’t be able to reach to D1, and D2 schools should not be able to move into the Big6 conferences.
