Recruiting in d2 Topic

I've been in d2 for awhile and literally have only scouted d1 recruits. Just got to wondering if it was worth scouting d2 at all or just keep to d1? Was debating on making my camp this time around d1/d2 or sticking to my usual d1 only. Thanks in advance.

There are some D2 gems with high potentials. I have a couple D2 recruits I am watching closely for next season. But it’s definitely a personal choice... you can get a steal at D2 with no competition from D1 coaches, but also running a camp with D2 recruits, you will get a lot of guys you don’t care about.

I too have found that if you recruit both, with luck there are D2 Gems to be had. Most D2 Coaches get D1 "tunnel vision" and forget until RS2 starts to start looking at D2 Recruits. You can still recruit D1 as the core of your program, but D2 still has recruiting potential.
Especially Transfers that appear after RS2 Starts. Many D1 transfer guys will fall to D2 I have found.

I've been splitting my effort about 70% D1 / 30% D2, and that's about how my roster breaks down too. All my D2 effort is scouting service + assistant coach.

Don’t put too much effort into D2 you will find 1 every season near home, sometimes 2, sometimes 0. I put 10-15 % in D2 only.

I echo zorzii on this, I only grab D2's when D1 is not yielding the results I was hoping for or I don't have the budget to compete with the top D2s and D1s for players (usually you can RS these guys and go uncontested)

If you check out https://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?tid=0&pid=4012032

He is still:
Black - ATH (73)
Green - Speed (62)
Black - Def (59)
Green - LP (45)
Green - Per (51)
Green - BH (42)
Blue - Pass (47)

Gonna be a certified stud, but I had to RS him and he won't be amazing until his RS Junior year, if you have a deep team or a small budget D2 can net some pretty solid guys.

I agree with what most coaches here are saying. There are entire sessions where I forget (or forego) scouting D2 altogether. Typically, when I have larger classes (4+ openings) I'll buy D2 in my home state and maybe a neighboring one or two just to make sure I've expanded my search sufficiently. But on smaller classes with a more limited budget I tend to save those dollars for D1 recruits. Not to say I haven't had a few D2 gems - just less of a focus for me unless I'm striking out on D1 guys and want to make sure there isn't a monster lurking in my backyard.

I've gotten some of my best players for free from scouting D2 but they are obviously going to be much more of a developmental project than D1 recruits are. All in all probably 70-80% of my scouting is done at D1 while the remaining money goes to scouting the nearby area for D2 freebies. Especially if you have four or five open spots, it can be nice to find a freebie or two in order to free up more resources for D1 studs.

I used the D2 scouting service on states high with JUCO players. Picking up high skilled D2 JUCO players to plug holes or fill the bench is an effective strategy.

For me personally it depends a lot on where my school is located. If I'm in an area that's more sparse or further away from a big recruiting center I will scout D2 to see if there are any hidden gems. If I'm somewhere like Texas or Florida I'm less likely to scout D2 since there are usually enough D1 recruits to go around. I will scout D2 California if I'm on the west coast because of all the JuCo's. If I can find a good JuCo that runs my offense or defense or better yet both those can usually be had with less chance of a battle.
