This is my second year with a very poor Livingstone team. Currently in recruiting phase 2. Looking through playstyle preferences for recruits, I notice I don't have a single "Good." I show bad for perimeter offense, neutral for paint offense, and neutral for strong defense.

Does this just mean that my team is more defense oriented, but still not good enough to be considered "strong?"

It's also weird to me that it's showing bad for perimeter, but neutral for paint.

I don’t know if anyone has pinpointed exactly what the criteria is for paint offense, but it’s definitely not just the inverse of perimeter. Perimeter offense is based on percentage of attempts taken from beyond the arc. I *think* paint offense is based on percentage of “points in paint” from overall points, which we don’t see cumulatively from a team standpoint, but you can see game by game in the individual box scores.

I’ve had good teams exactly where you are - bad for perimeter, neutral for paint offense; it is often true with a team that gets a lot of guard scoring, but very little from 3 pt attempts. It basically just means the team is scoring most of its points on mid range jump shots and the FT line, and you just won’t get those advantages in recruiting, so you account for that.

Unfortunately, Paint Offense is also based off of 3pt percentage, instead of points in the paint. It just is a shifted and different percentage scale. It is possible to be neutral for paint and good, neutral, or bad for perimeter. You can be very bad for perim, and good for paint, or very good for perim, and only bad for paint.

The perimeter scale is actually decently defined in terms of percentages, and makes sense in terms of what it is based on. The paint scale and definition is idiotic.

Is that based on a CS ticket, gdog?

That is.... dumb.

The fact that paint offense is based on percentage of shots that are 3s is from seble:

Play style
  • No preference
  • Fast Tempo (credit is adjusted based on the school's tempo in the current season, which is determined using possessions per game)
  • Perimeter Offense (credit is adjusted based on the school's tendency for perimeter shots in the current season, which is determined using percent of total FGA that are 3-pointers)
  • Paint Offense (credit is adjusted based on the school's tendency for paint or mid-range shots in the current season, which is determined using percent of total FGA that are 3-pointers)
  • Strong Defense (credit is adjusted based on the school's defensive performance in the current season, which is determined using points allowed per possession)
The percentages at which the cut offs change are based on my tracking them over the course of my team's historical performance.

Wow, I thought the beta forums were zapped.

If that was never updated, I agree, that is a very bad way to determine “paint offense” preference.
