Small Forward Preferences Topic

There seems to be more variability in the types of small forwards being used (D2) than in almost any other position. All else being equal, I'm interested in whether coaches prefer to have high ball handling/passing or higher low post/perimeter in their small forwards.

IMO there are so many FB/FCP teams now that BH is a must at the SF, preferably 60 or higher. Passing and speed above 50, some ATH/DEF like always and then whatever else is gravy. If they can score then great. If not, at least they're not a liability on either end of the floor.

I look for ATH/DEF first, and then BH/Pass second. If they can score it's great, but I'm primarily looking for somebody I can slot in SG/SF/PF position depending on matchups for defensive purposes, and then facilitate the offense of the scorers in the lineup.

Pretty similar to what I do, in a roundabout way. I value ATH/DEF very highly at all positions. SF is kind of a swing man who usually can also double as a SG or a PF if needed.

When recruiting, I don't necessarily target specific guys at each of the five individual positions. I pretty much target just a generic "guard" (PG/SG) and "forward" (PF/C). and let the chips fall where they may. I rarely specifically target a SF when recruiting, but when I do, I find that they are often undervalued.

Once my roster is built, I'll set my depth chart accordingly. The best BH/Pass will be PG. The best REB/BLK will be my C. SG and PF just kind of fall into place after that. SF is more my "leftover" position . . . my most versatile guy left after PG/SG/PF/C will usually be my SF. Sometimes he's more of a SG/perimeter type. Sometimes he's more of a PF/inside type. The roster basically dictates the positions for me, not the other way around.

Agreed with all the above. I feel like my SF spot defines my team's sets somewhat. Since I play all the sets, my SF in an uptempo press type of team usually ends up being a 3rd guard. In a triangle/man team I try to get 90 ATH - 90 DEF guy with passing skills. In a 2-3 I aim for a SF that can rebound (you could almost say another PF here). And so on
