HOF should be about the best of the best on the field and nothing else. Should we exclude Ty Cobb because he was a racist,Mickey Mantle because he was an alcoholic?
Pete Rose is the all time hits leader and betting on baseball doesn’t change those numbers. Shoeless Joe Jackson had a career .356 BA,his supposed part in throwing the WS won’t change his numbers either.
As for the steroid guys,that was the drug of choice for the era like amphetemenes were where to the previous one. I’m sure the players most people want to exclude from the HOF weren’t the only ones juicing. They were already the best of the best.

correct...i was going to mention that as well........it was a lie.

It bears pointing out that just because the biographer took liberties, doesn't necessarily mean that he wasn't a racist. It merely means that the anecdotal "evidence" was false. Remember, this was a time when a player was nicknamed "Nig" because he had a dark complexion... and Cap Anson was unquestionably a bigot and is in the Hall of Fame.

Sure you could go the whole “everybody was racist back then” route. Maybe it’d work against the Babe or Honus. But Cobb and his family helped the black community.

IIRC his dad was an abolitionist and his grandfather was run out of town for helping black people,

anyways here’s an article about this topic. It’s not the same one someone on this website sent me years ago, but it does mention some of the things he did, like remodel homes in the black community, and fight for African Americans to play in the Texas League, etc.

im with drocks on this....cobb was also well read and literature im talking.....he was no pete rose......
