Redshirting a JUCO Topic

I was looking for some information on redshirting a JUCO. I did find an old thread that said you need to inform them during recruiting. Too late for me on that point since he already signed and has a Want to Play preference (though I didn't promise anything). He has a lot of green potential and a 69 W/E so I'd like to develop him a bit more for one season. I'm in a complete rebuild in a full D1 conference so the next few seasons aren't going to be competitive for me anyways so I suppose it wouldn't be the worst if he did leave.

If I do end up redshirting him is there any good way to predict how he will react? I'm assuming since I didn't warn him and he wants to play it's pretty likely he's gone, is that a safe bet?

I have successfully recruited and redshirted multiple JUCOs to this point. I have never attempted to RS a JUCO with the "Wants to Play" preference. I am pretty sure you must inform them during recruiting, but I have never tried redshirting one without informing them during recruiting. What therealjerk said is just not true. If you couple the action of informing of redshirt with HVs, you can offset the negative effects. Yes, sometimes recruits will get ****** and not accept further effort from you, but from what I have gathered, that is usually when they want to play.

I've successfully informed and I've had a few who accepted RS without being informed. Had one accept RS during senior year although I think this is exceedingly rare since most players drop to 1 WE as seniors. AFAIK there is never a penalty to check too see if a player will take it because you can always restore eligibility. I even tried it on players I'd given promises to see and there is no adverse effect once you restore eligibility.

I haven't monitored the "wants to play" preference enough to tell if that is a decisive factor

Great topic.
Unofficially but from my experience:

- I've found that any player with a "Wants To Play" preference will drop to WE of 1 if offered a redshirt (and yes, removing the redshirt restores his WE). This applies even if the guy is the suckiest player on my roster (like freshman Meadows on my Crum-103 team).

- Guys without "Wants to Play" will typically accept the redshirt, provided they're not a high level recruit (Top 100). Currently like my guys Cabello in Smith-108 and Tyson in Naismith-109.

- I've never had a Juco accept a redshirt without his WE going to 1. But every Juco I've signed has had a "Wants To Play" preference.

- I once had a soph accept a redshirt with no WE drop, but he was clearly the weakest player on my roster (Janus on my Smith-105 Marquette team who just graduated last year). I think when he was a freshman i had redshirted some other guy.

- The only time i offer a redshirt during recruiting is if a player has a lot of green categories, but low ratings, and a solid WE, and he'd need a redshirt year to develop and be decent by his soph year. So someone that i wouldn't want at all without the redshirt.

I side with therealjerk on this one. I don't have a ton of experience with this. Maybe 10 situations total in my career like this. And I can't think of ANY, where offering the redshirt was just no big deal. They've always dropped to 0 in everything.

The only time i've had success doing this (and I just did it yesterday actually) is when I'm the only school on the players considering list, and I KNOW he will sign the next cycle, and i'm very high on THIS cycle. If you offer it then, he may sign and accept.

But all in all, that redshirt button as a recruiting action will destroy you

I'm going to try and redshirt him when the world rolls tomorrow. Currently he has a 69 WE and is a 609 OVL PF. That puts him about the lower-mid of my squad depending on offseason development but he isn't the worst player on my team. He is Green/Blue in everything but Passing (Black) and Shot Block (Yellow).

It will definitely be interesting. I would have loved to have this guy on one of my D3 squads, but since its a D1 team in full rebuild I really only want him if he's going to take the redshirt. I'll be sure to update once I Redshirt him and see what happens.

Tried Redshirting him, sure enough his WE dropped to 11.

You're going to get a definite NO from any player with "wants to play" in their preferences. You'll even get some blowback from some who didn't list "wants to play" but it's not as bad. My guy only lost like 3 WE.

I don't use the "plan to redshirt" in recruiting. I just recruit a player or two without the "wants to play" preference.

maybe im just getting lucky... but.... i have RSed jucos a bunch of times.

i always inform jucos of RS and almost never inform freshmen.

I was under the impression that it is almost impossible to RS a juco without informing them, but i could be wrong.

for me it has been very rare for JUCO to react negatively when i inform them. let me clarify... there is a slight negative reaction that can be overcome by a couple or three home visits. but, for me it has been very rare for me to drop off their radar completely. i will say i have seen that on a few occassions... i cant say for sure if it was because they had wants to play, or if all those who were ok with the inform RS had wants to play or not.

i think maybe when im recruiting d1 from d3 is when i might drop off from inform to RS.

i probably RS a juco once every 3 seasons or so.. i really prefer to RS them because otherwise that first year thier IQ really hurts them and even the second year the IQ is less than ideal
