Wow. Indeed a different picture. I have been reading "The New Biographical History of Baseball" and what emerges there is a picture of the early game being ridden with game fixing. There is every reason to think that John McGraw (!) was involved a bunch of times in throwing or fixing games. So was Ty Cobb. It was a mess and the Black Sox scandal seems to have been the straw that broke the camel's back. McGraw was close to Arnold Rothstein for example.
