Rule 5 Timing Topic

I have a ML Player needing assignment (signed as a FA). He is not on my 40 yet. Do I have to put him on the 40 before the Rule 5 draft (he has no red diamond by his name).
Similarily, I am about to acquire through trade another MLer. He will also need an assignment.

If I leave them both needing assignment before the Rule 5 roster freeze what happens? Do I basically get 2 extra spots on my 40?
Both guys will be needing assignment for less than 48 hours before the roster freeze

Yeah, leave them unassigned. While they're there, they won't be in Rule 5. Also, if they have contracts longer than the upcoming season, they won't be eligible for Rule 5 anyway.
