I will say that is feels like California has too many recruits for the number of schools as those teams/conference dominate DII in many worlds.
There are a lot of California recruits, but there are also a lot of schools out there, in all levels. Should be a signal for coaches, populate the WCC and MWC and Big West. If you’re D2 or D3, try to scout out there, maybe with the camp.
I coach CSU, San Bernardino.....I don't think this is good advice. I was a #1 seed, and am still #2 RPI after losing in the Elite 8 to a conference mate I scraped two wins against during the season. Half of my roster is from east of the Mississippi, because the recruiting is so competitive in CA. I scout east first where there is less competition and let the AP do their work, instead of battling on every good recruit with the rest of my conference, a few excellent teams from other nearby conferences, and of course the late DI poachers (not really poaching since we are all going after legit DI recruits for the most part). On any decent recruit in the area there are 3-4 conference schools on them from the start, all with great prestige and preferences. Encouraging people to go scout that area and throw their hat into the ring is like telling people to go butcher a deer barehanded then go for a jog through the lion's pen at the zoo.
If we were talking about the PAC 10, your point would be somewhat valid. We’re not. If a D2 conference is dominating a world, and especially if it is happening across multiple worlds (obviously not to the degree in this example, but generally, as mully asserts), it means there are a lot of scraps falling from the D1 table in the region. Not limited to CA, but all over the region - AZ, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY all produce good D1 recruits. That region’s camp can be a useful tool.
I’m not suggesting a lower level school from the east should fully scout CA, or go planting a flag. But see what falls. Some of those guys may want to leave the region, and they would be on decent footing to compete.
