Can 67/75/48/63 play 3rd base at all? Like this guy is like 160 OPS better than a different stud fielding (77-78-87-75) possible 3B. This would just be for a stretch run/ postseason.

A guy in one of my leagues has done it with a similar player the past two seasons. Your guy has a higher glove, but it is the best comparison that I can think of. It has not been a pretty sight.

I have done it in the past, a player I don't have a position for but I really want his bat in the lineup... no better defensive option... too many LF/1B types... I stick one of them at 3B. The gamble is that that position doesn't handle too many chances, and the odds of errors break my way over the short term.

I actually had one of them win the Silver Slugger for 3B one season. Guy was a kind of terrible player LOL.

Thank you both!

It's not as ugly as it should be... he's played 5 140-game seasons at 3B and averaged -10 ((+) plays - (-) plays) and fielded .950 in about 2000 chances. Average is about +6 and .970; so he gave up about 24 plays per season defensively compared to average. That's about 20 runs... he could easily make that up with his bat.

You could wonder if this is a hint or not... in most drafts when I evaluate the prospects listed at 3B, I'm lucky to actually find one genuine major league prospect. You might find one hitter, maybe two, but their fielding projections are always FAR less than I normally accept at 3B. I often just don't draft 3B at all, most of my major league 3Bs are former SS who don't reach 4x85 ratings.

Most often, the '3B' in my prospects just look like guys who don't fit into any other position, maybe have a little stronger arm. That's it.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this Dedelman. I'm too lazy!

If the bat will outperform the runs he gives away, then it is worth it over a long haul. In a short playoff series it could hurt more than help...if his bat is quiet and he makes a couple of key errors, could cost you a game (or maybe two) in a 5 or 7 game series.
