Zone Poll: Positioning Topic

Scenario:

1). Your team runs zone defense and has the personnel to comfortably run 2-3 and 3-2
2). Your opponent doesn't attempt threes at all.

Question:

Which defensive setup would you choose?

Thanks for the input

2-3 at -5

Does most of his scoring come from his guards? If it does, and they have 50ish PE, they are often inclined to take a lot of medium range jumpshots. If you set your 2-3 defense at -5, they will make a lot of those medium ranged jumpshots. I would be more inclined to play a team like that at 3-2 (-5) or if forced by personnel to play a 2-3, push it out to -3 or -4

I'd agree with this if no 3's at all although if I was only 9 deep I would go for less than -5 because of foul danger.

I'd want to know more about the rebounding comparison between the teams.

WIS (thankfully) nerfed the -5 like 10 years ago because it was too effective. It can still work, but you have to consider other stuff besides perimeter.

Yes to all this.

The only time I consider 2-3 at -5 is if they are getting very little scoring from the guards, which is pretty rare among human coached teams. 2-3 at -2 is usually about right for teams that don’t shoot 3s, but have decent scoring guards.

A mental pic of a 2-3 (-5) looks like 5 defenders inside the half arc under the basket where the charging/blocking fouls are decided. Can 5 men fit in that little area? Haha

depends on the opponents PE ratings and the rebounding advantage.

This. And there literally isn't a factor that would pull me out of it.

I would add that 9 times out of 10, my personnel is better suited to 3-2 rather than 2-3. I have found 3-2 at -4 or -5 tends to work really well against the type of team described in OP, especially if they have LP heavy guards doing a fair bit of scoring.
