My teams have always had an issue with turnovers with FCP teams, even if they have great ball handling and passing skills. So I am asking for input from some of you super smart coaches on how to minimize the effects of the FCP teams. Sitemail if you have something that you do not want published in the forum. I will gratefully accept any help you might be able to offer publicly or privately.
Target minutes will help some. Learn them.
i totally disagree with this. target minutes is WAY harder than fatigue and most people don't even bother learning to play it, and aren't giving up much if anything by ignoring it completely. i do think target minutes has a place in low-fatiguing situations - namely, for zone teams. the more fatigue and the higher the tempo, the worse target minutes is, so running target minutes against press when you don't run it against other teams, is more or less the complete opposite of what makes sense.

great press teams are superior to great teams of all other varieties, so sometimes, the answer is you just kind of are screwed if you are playing a really good, well-built press team. however, unless you are in that top few teams in the country group consistently, that probably isn't your problem.

as was mentioned, having good iq, bh, pass will help limit turnovers some - but frankly, against strong defensive (ath/spd/def/iq/sta) press teams, they are going to generate a lot of turnovers. trying to stop them is like trying to stop the sun from rising. instead, you can focus on your strengths, or their weaknesses.

one thing to think about is that beating press teams often comes down to hurting them where they are weak. running slowdown doesn't reduce turnovers per possession as much as it just reduces possessions. if the press team is better, and you expect to lose, running slowdown might give you a better chance to pull off the upset. however, against evenly matched press teams, running slowdown can be the absolute worst thing you can reasonably do. here's why. the press team deals with WAY more fatigue and foul related issues. by reducing possessions, you reduce fatigue and fouls for everybody. this makes their life easy. you want to do the opposite. shift your scoring (a bit - not drastically) to high-foul drawing players, if you can (preferably guards). increase your chances of getting 2 fouls on them early or 3 fairly early, and messing up their rotation in a really significant way. maybe even run uptempo into them - running uptempo into an evenly matched press team, when you are a deep zone or man team, is really often a really good idea. and if you are a superior team with good depth, running uptempo into them is often the one single great use uptempo has in this whole game.
