Promised Starts oddity. Topic

The player below was offered a start on the cycle that he signed. He started the first 14 games and then came off the bench.

The player didn’t complain once. No WE drop etc.

I can vouch for this. As beach and I discussed this in detail.

NEVER seen anything like it. What gives?

Do you have reason to be sure that the promise was processed before he signed? For example, did you discuss details with the other coach? Did the player’s consideration level move up in a way consistent with where the battle was at?

I’ve suspected that sometimes visits and promises made on the cycle the player signs don’t process properly. I recall an instance of it’s acknowledged happening during beta right before launch, with a promise it would be looked into, and then never hearing anything about it. There are the (extremely rare) cases where high D1 coaches report doing like 15 visits to an international and losing to a D3, which absolutely couldn’t happen normally, based on what I’ve seen as both a D1 and a D3.

I havent personally seen a case where it might have happened to a player I was recruiting, though I’ve been looking for one. This looks like it could be one, possibly. But it’s also possible you were lucky.

I got a better one that I've shared a few times.

This guy had promised start and I forgot to start him for first 10 games of the season and his WE went UP.

Look at the final total. Started 18/30 games and his WE increased by 6 points.

When I say I can vouch for this, I say that because beach sent me a screenshot of the player profile with the "start" icon clearly pictured. And also with freshman you can still see recruiting history, and it shows that the offered start processed as normal

To be clear, I’m not really interested in what the history tab says, because I suspect there may occasionally be glitches where actions *look* like they process according to history, but the effort credit isn’t actually added. Or rather, the player makes a decision before the credit is added in the cycling process. I suspect this, because there was a verified instance of it happening in beta, and there have been some very odd outlier cases (previously with visits, but I’m sure a glitch could happen with promises, too). So I’m mostly interested if he’s sure the promise was processed in terms of his considering level went up appropriately during recruiting.

Like I said, very possible he’s just lucky, and got a guy with a 0 hypothetical hidden “cares about PT/Promises” rating. Or got a roll of .03 on an action - complaining about pt/promises - with a probability of 95%.

That is entirely possible. It could be a last cycle processing glitch. Which would explain the entire thing.

You could always send a ticket, and see what they say. If the answer is along the lines of “yeah, you may rarely have a player who just doesn’t care about promises, because we don’t want anything to be absolute”, then that’s probably the right answer.

Alright so I have another example.

I have a player who I offered the start to on one of the first recruiting cycles.

He started 5 of the first 7 games and I then got this message.

’Coach, why would you promise to make me THE starter if you were going to have me on the bench? I don't call starting 5 out of 7 games making me THE starter. Your word was a huge factor in me coming to Kutztown U. and it's going to be a huge factor in my staying at Kutztown U..’

So I started him. After 5 games I got this message.

Coach, I had some buddies that are playing at other schools but their coaches didn't keep their words about starter spots - just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you keeping your word.

His Work Ethic dropped after the first message and went back to normal after the second message.

He then came off the bench the next 7 games. No more messages though.

prior to the CT and beyond he was at 17/26

I am going to test this out with one final player and see whether the second message is an indicator

‘Coach, why would you promise to make me THE starter if you were going to have me on the bench? I don't call starting 8 out of 11 games making me THE starter. Your word was a huge factor in me coming to S. Dakota and it's going to be a huge factor in my staying at S. Dakota.’

I should get another message in a few games stating that he is happy that I kept my word. Then his WE should go back up and I can sit him again.
