So I decided to start a 3rd team, but I haven't coached in D3/D2 in like 10 years. I selected a D3 team in an empty conference with an A prestige and no scholarships to fill my first season. I think the team is good enough to make the NT this season and next season (if I stay).

I know that 1 NT trip will qualify me for D2, but I'm not sure if it would be better to spend an extra season in D3. With a second NT, would I qualify for more quality D2 teams? My thinking is that spending an extra season in D3 will cost me less time in D2.

My goal is to take over a lower (D+ prestige) power 6 team without wasting too much time in the lower divisions.

You can go to DII even without an NT. I think you'll qualify for most DII jobs with just the one season. Once at DII, three NT bids will get you to low-DI. Obviously the deeper you go in the NT, the higher into DI you can reach. I would suggest an all-SIM DII conference and just get the automatic bid.

Quick follow-up question: does it matter if I stay at the same D2 school for all 3 seasons, or can I move around? After my first season at D2, I've realized that I suck at D2 recruiting lol.

You will need to stick with one school, otherwise you will be penalized for lack of loyalty.
