Perimeter Shooting, Anyone? Topic

From time to time people tinker with the idea of getting an entire team of stud shooters to see how it would play out. And so I give you...Drury (link below)! Can’t say I’ve ever seen a D1 team with an 80+ TEAM perimeter rating, let alone a D2 team. Incredible.

I just played that team! Just went +5 and dominated at the FT line.

I dont think this type of team is ideal in HD due to the high rate of fouling vs real life.

He mentioned in the past that he is doing an experiment there to see how a team of all shooters can do.

It’s a cool experiment. I crushed them on the glass and they fouled way too much. That said, it’s the kind of team that could beat anyone with the right shooting.

But with such low athleticism and mediocre speed none of those shooters will get open enough to take advantage of their shooting skill. Steph Curry is an incredible shooter who is fast and athletic, so he creates open looks and space between his defenders to nail shots. Slow him down and he is just a great shooter with someones hand in his face never getting a chance at a clean shot.

yeah, its clearly not an ideal approach, but i applaud the guy for explicitly trying stuff to see how it works. i used to operate at all times under the mantra of 'its worth trading anything for knowledge' - i definitely think its worth it (and fun) to try stuff out and see how it goes, and in the long run, those trades will pay off. a lot of coaches in particular are afraid to experiment with their best teams, afraid they will screw it up and blow the opportunity - but IMO, those are precisely the teams one should be experimenting with! you can't learn how to coach a top team by experimenting with a mediocre one.

i think the obvious 1-sided nature of the team (begging for a +3 to +5) and also how he's not really optimizing diminishing returns - hes basically trading perfectly good reb, guard skills, and defensive abilities for more per scoring, when he doesn't need more per - those things are going to make the ceiling for these kinds of teams a lot lower than others. still a cool experiment though.

The 23 team rebounding hurts a lot.

I actually won a NT once, many years ago, playing +5 on defense for the whole season.
