The Job System in V3 Topic

Am at a mid-major in Crum, and in three of the last five seasons, my RPI has been around 27. Like the league well enough but always check when job hunting time comes. Usually, my adviser tells me there are three or four keep lookoing, maybe half a dozen or so not qualified--and all the rest are step backwards.

I'm confused. What's the question?

Not a question, an observation. If you have a reasonably successful program and you check available jobs, there are four categories of advice: Keep looking, not qualified, step backwards--and Qualified. What I am saying is that for the past few years, "Qualified" has gone missing. Like this year--three keep looking, six not qualified and all the rest step backwards. Couple of other human coaches in the league noticed it too. One guy anted to join a friend in another league; another wanted to move up to a major.

I believe the lack of "Qualified" is because you are looking to move within the same division and it has been that way for a while. When I look to move from D2 to D2 all the jobs say "lateral." But when I look at moving from D2 to D1 all the jobs either say Qualified or Not Qualified.

I've felt the same frustration. I have a D1 C+ program. Every job is either a step backwards or not qualified. I don't expect to take over an A+ program but it would be nice to get an available B or B+ rather than it going to an AI.

Does building a team to a C+ prestige make you qualified to take over a better program like say a B prestige team? Make the tournament consistently and you can then get the jobs you want.

Unfortunately that hasn't proven true. I've made the tourney (only) once with an RPI ranging from 61 to 89 over the past 6 seasons. However, the last two seasons I haven't qualified for any openings and have been declined for 6 combined openings of B or B+. Ultimately I would like to build my program into a B then A. I don't expect to beat a B coach for the opening. Howver, I would like to think I'm worthy of a job upgrade if I've shown some success (from D) if the alternative is an AI awarded program.

I'm not agreeing with how this is done but my impression is that your teams prestige has to be at least a half letter better than the team you want to take over. ie, if you're a C prestige you can generally get teams with C- or worse prestige. Teams with very high base prestige can be even harder to get.

I think it has to be 2 better - if I am a C then you get D+ (not all D+ depending on conference strengths)

You're right pnedwek, thanks!

I was C+ last year and I was eligible for B- jobs. (D1)

I built a D- mid major D1 into a C+. I moved to C- Texas Tech (advisor said it would be Step Backwards).

It’s not only prestige. Experience plays a part. You can move from a lower baseline school built up to A to a high baseline A+ school, if you’ve been around long enough.

It’s too restrictive. Programs rather continue floundering than have a viable human coach. One of my co-coaches has 20+ wins 8 seasons running and a b- and yet an equal rated wake and sc both horrible for seasons have no interest. I personally had less options this past season (zero) than when I had with the previous season despite a better record. I get that I shouldn’t be jumping from d to b schools but when I couldn’t even go lateral or to a d-.... it seems to reliant on rpi and post season success. Some schools sure but mid majors or worse... really?
