efficiency- are TO's and OR's affected by distro? Topic

was kinda pondering on this a while back when we discussed distro here... and something occurred to me.

most efficiency ratings include things outside of shooting, namely turnovers and offensive rebounds. and i believe it includes other things as formula gets more complex.

and, if we are trying to figure out who the best player is or who is most deserving of starts or minutes, these formulas may help with that... but.... if we just want to figure out how to distribute the offensive load.... do we want to give credit for things (like offensive rebounds and steals) that create more possessions? it seems to me that a player will have the same number of steals regardless of his distro, ... offensive boards? not sure about that one, i would guess in this game it wouldnt be much different as distro changes, although i feel like in real life OR would decrease as distro increases.

OK so, my big question is... how much are turnovers in HD affected by distro? I am pretty sure there is a relationship, but i also feel like there are a certain number of turnovers that a player will have just as a result of being on the floor. and i think that number increases for guards (especially pg) and decreases for bigs. and certainly it is affected by other players on the floor and opponent and offensive scheme.

i think you are on the right track there - there is a relationship between turnovers and distro (more distro = more TOs), but there is also a base amount of TOs for each player (well, which scales per minute), which is a lot higher for guards than bigs.

i would say in general, TOs are impacted by distro quite significantly - for a high scoring player, the TOs from distro outstrip the base TOs. i don't know where that happens, its not like the TOs from scoring dwarf the base. to pull something from my backside with zero thinking or looking around... a starter around 12ppg is perhaps pulling about half their TOs from their distro, and half from just being on the court?

oh, on offensive rebounds - i don't think distro has anything to do with it. my belief is neither the shot / type of shot before the rebound (this bit CS confirmed) nor the person taking the shot (this bit is not confirmed) has any impact on the rebound that follows. we know that put-backs and tip-ins are not driven by distro, so i think its a pretty safe bet that distro has either no or minimal impact on offensive rebounds.
