Toying with the Redshirt option Topic

I’m sure we all tried it out. Pull the trigger on a redshirting a kid (who has no promised PT or mins at signing), reading the disgruntled email from the player who’s WE plummets 20 or so pts, then out of sheer panic, quickly remove the redshirt & revert him back to his original status & WE value. Sure, I get a cautionary message prior to pulling the redshirt trigger something to the effect “are you sure that you want to redshirt? This could have severe repercussions”.

So what (if any) repercussions are there is we retract the redshirt? Have any of you followed such a player’s career and felt that they fell way short of their initial projected development or production? I haven’t seen anything overtly, but often wonder at the conclusion of their career, could they have played or developed better? Just curious.

In my experience, there are no repercussions for retracting a redshirt. The player progresses as if nothing ever happened.

That was my hunch as well. It makes you wonder why they even implemented the redshirt retraction option. It would be better if they removed that option & we deal with the consequences of redshirting a kid as a roll of the dice. That would make it a fun real life gamble imo.

I kind of agree, but I also think we should be able to redshirt multiple kids. And instead of being a “roll of the dice” I think the process should be intuitive and straightforward. The topic is something that should probably come up in the scouting and recruiting process, and the openness to it should be entirely a product of the kids preferences against the school’s prestige. A 575 OVR kid who will redshirt for an A+ baseline prestige D1 school won’t necessarily redshirt for a D2 school, or even a low D1 school.

Unless they’re going to make the whole process more realistic and intelligent, I don’t think they should mess with it.

there are no adverse effects if you retract the redshirt

In real life does anyone think that coaches dont interact with players about possible redshirts - and if the kid is very unhappy sometimes reconsider?

I would bet that in real life some kids with whom the topic is raised are fine with it, some are not - and if it is retracted some get demoralized and some get energized and work harder

Apparently a Senior who was Honorable Mention All-American as a Junior does not like being given a Redshirt.

I've noticed that if an incoming freshman had "Wants To Play" on his Preferences list, that he won't accept a redshirt no matter how sucky he is. This is just what I've noticed from my experience.
