Personally I think defense is MOST important in zone.

Yes, you can 'target' a player with low defense pretty easily in M2M but you can also target the player with zone, in a way.

But zone has the worst defensive rebounding and worst turnover generation of all 3 defenses. The main benefit (besides stamina preservation) is low FG%. 2-3 is best 2pt defense and 3-2 is best 3pt defense. For bigs, block is really important along with defense but block is much less important at the 1,2 and 3. Speed is also really important for guard defense but you still need Def rating.

In my opinion, Defense rating is the least important in Press. Press relies on Speed for turnover creation and Ath for fouling. Obviously defense is a component here but if I'm skimping on Defense in any set, it's probably press.
I'm not sure I'm convinced the zones are stronger defensively against even the 'overloaded' range than man...

I always considered stamina to be the overwhelming benefit of the zone. Also like the ability to put your best defender at the 3 and really beef up against any team's top scorer.
i'm not sure what you mean by overloaded range but i pretty much agree with both of you.

i agree that the zone lets you play your best guys more and make the most of them, putting forward a higher level of talent than you could in a more fatigue-draining scheme. and also, that because zone is taking a hit on reb and tos both, you really can't afford to give up much else - at high levels of play.

now, for a new low d1 program, that is obviously out the window - but i don't agree that this guy's crap defense hurts less in the zone (which OP said). if anything, i would say it hurts more, because you can't be mindful of who he's guarding like you can in man - you are going to be playing crappy teams and mostly sims, i would expect you are going to face very few opponents who are working to actively target the guy.

anyway, i can see a place for a guy like this in low d1. his defense (ability) is too low for me, for any prestige of d1 team, but off the bench if he can take the lion's share of the bench scoring, he could contribute significantly without hurting more than he helps. its an extreme case, of bad defense, but i generally figure low d1 is more about finding guys who can help than avoiding guys who hurt you, like you have to in high d1. so i think its a decent pickup, or could be, if he grows up fairly nicely.

Guy’s excited about a player. You guys tear him down. I swear most of you would have to cheer up to kill yourselves.
Ha. Love this response.

1: "I am happy about something and want to spread my joy."

2. "You are dumb."
I guess I can see both sides of this. The people commenting in this thread genuinely want to help others succeed.

It wouldn't help the OP get better (or anyone else reading this thread) if the response was "wow, yeah that guy is great at D1, way to go!" I think that could possibly encourage the OP to continue to recruit players with low defense and that MAY not be the best advice. I think the intent of what a couple people are saying is, "yeah that's fine if you're in a pinch but just FYI, if you want to be successful, having lots of players like that aren't going to help you win many games/titles". It's meant as helpful information.

On the other hand, you're right that the feedback should be constructive. I can probably do better in that regard.

I think the timing of the signing is also relevant and part of tdowdy's excitement. That's a great find for the last day when you're rebuilding a program. I'm not excited (as a conference mate) that tdowdy's working that hard (and finding value) in his recruiting. :)

The guy posting the comment has 71 HD seasons on his profile. He's not new. I don't wanna lie to anyone. I'd go as far as to say that I'm better at helping new coaches improve than I am at playing the game. There was nothing said in my post that would tear him down.

I don't take anything as a rip on me. Now I will admit, I have virtually no experience in D1 under 3.0. However, I know how to play this game. As beas said the excitement wasn't about how good the player is as I know the guy isn't a player who is going to win me a title, however finding him at the end of recruiting with that much potential, I had to go after him to see how good he gets. At worst, he ends up a player who sits at the end of the bench, but he could end up being a useful player off the bench. Most everyone here might not take him, but I'm taking over a team with a "D" prestige and I have virtually no talent. Why not take a flyer on him.

I’m in agreement here. My goal would never be to rip someone down. Constructive criticism is the best way to teach in my opinion. If I gave fully positive feedback, a) I’d be lying and b) I wouldn’t be effectively helping people.

It is pretty awesome when to roll the dice and the get the green train. If the guy is a great D1 player or not doesn’t matter, those greens will make him fun to watch develop.

tdiddy - post his improvements after each season if you don't mind! I'd love to see how this guy ends up over time. congrats on finding a diamond in the rough!

Benis, that is incredibly mature of you. You are more of a grown-up than I profess to be.

I code in R and post/contribute a lot to a site called "Stack Overflow". The community is for people that code and have questions about coding. The forums are ruthless in that if you post a dumb question you figuratively get crucified by the community for being either too lazy to search the archives for an answer before you post a redundant question or if you provide insufficient detail.

I think that the Original Poster (OP) is not a rookie and was posting to provide some content. Not sure if he wanted an "attaboy" or if he was really pumped. Either way the post warranted a lot more attention than it probably deserved.

Wow! Incredibly mature, that's not something I get called often.

Before HD, I was pretty active on the mazdaspeedforums. Holy smokes those guys are BRUTAL. Absolutely zero tolerance for stupid or repetitive questions. You will get absolutely berated by everyone. Hell, one time they found out this one guy's personal information and started calling his work (he worked in a car shop) and told his boss that he was peeping on dudes in the bathroom. It was insane... and hilarious.

But yeah, it's all kittens and lambs over here in HD land.

I can do that, he fortunately did accept a redshirt, so that will help with him reaching his maximum potential. I'm excited to see if I got a great steal or if he turns blue after 2 or 3 points in each category and ends up being a bust. I know my luck and it will probably be the latter lol
