Who bats in what spot, and why?

What's your say on this?

Do you follow conventional wisdom, or is it stat based? Some want speed at leadoff. Some want speed in the 2 hole to prevent double plays.

I just go by total PA.

When going well--stat based

losing streak-----alphabetically, out of a hat, or dart board

I don't even look at speed. In general I want my 4 best offensive players in the top 4 spots, ideally looking something like this:

1: High OBP, low SLG
2: High OBP, high SLG
3: Low OBP, high SLG
4: High OBP, high SLG
5-8: descending order of OBP

That's just a general guideline. I deviate from that in many different ways. Will sometimes adjust a player up or down a slot based on extreme PA differences. Will sometimes bat a low PA, high OBP player 9th and put the pitcher in the 8 slot. etc.

I don’t have to rest anyone that way. 575 can play almost the whole season in the 8 spot.

Yeah, put some slow doughboy out front. Everyone trample him as you circle the bases.

Speed is way overrated at the top of the order. If your high OBP guys have speed, great. If they don't, you'll score more runs with Wade Boggs leading off than with Omar Moreno. I put a (slightly) higher priority on speed at the bottom of the order, where bases and runs are harder to come by.

In a DH league I love having speed batting 9th.........not sure what I like matters much, though. I'm usually lucky to finish above .500.........

I like my high OBP and SB guys in the top 2 spots. Then run some HR/RBI guys in 3 through 6 with trying to alternate between L and R batters, I try to bat my catcher 7th and then another decent Ave/SB/OBP guy in the 8th spot.

i go with
1.obp
2. obp -best hitter- looking for pc/pa
3. best hitter
4 avg/slg
5 avg/slg
6 obp/slg
7 avg/con
8 avg/obp/slg highest k rate
9obp

Beyond the normal stuff the thing I've found works well is I like to bat a high HR guy with low avg/obp 7 or 8 to cleanup the guys on base before the pitcher comes up. Dave Kingman is the prototype for this but in progressives there are lots of guys like this that end up playing and driving in a surprising number of runs.

I sometimes use the cool lineup analysis tool on Baseball Musings.com.

Pretty boring but makes sense to me.

leadoff -I think your highest obp at leadoff. Speed a plus but not required.
2nd contact hitter (preferably lefty in case they are holding your leadoff guy. High doubles help score from 1st. BBs don’t drive in runs. Need the runner advanced...not necessarily by bunt.
3rdBest hitter...average and ops. Every hit likely to produce run.
4thgood average and contact. Doesn’t have to be slugger. See above.
5th slugger to cleanup runners
6th good obp guy...2nd leadoff hitter
7th slugger....capable of getting a run with hit
8th worst hitter
