Going All In The Same Cycle as Signings Begin Topic

Is this a viable strategy? Optimal strategy? Dirty?

I think some coaches perceive it as dirty, but I think it's just strategy. It's happened to me before and I've still won the player. I've also had some instances where I'm putting in on a kid and don't know if I'm going to offer him until late, so it could happen to you and that not even be the coaches intention

I've been burned by it but also done it to others. It's all in the game IMO. It's important to know when you're recruiting over your head (as a DII or DIII) knowing that can always be a possibiity.

I've never played D1, but D2/D3 I believe this is an optimal strategy, and one I use because if you drop visits early that money can be wasted if a higher division coach comes.

Viable, not dirty, only really optimal if you are reaching up, ie trying to get a player by battling a team you may not be able to handle straight up. It’s usually a guaranteed battle (unless you get lucky, and your rival has already spent all they can/are willing to spend on the player).

I just see it as, there’s really no upside of using money early. Like even 2 D3s battling for a D2, there’s no value in placing that money earlier than signing cycle.

There "can" be value in doing this. But generally I agree.

Depending on who the opposing coach is, or his situation, it could make him back off if you "stake your claim" on the player. But as mentioned earlier here, that does put you at the mercy of being snipped by a higher division school. So it's not something you wanna try often if you're inexperienced as a coach.

An example I have done.... (D2 here) I had 5 openings and lots of resources. My conference mate had only 1 opening, very little resources. We both apparently started targeting a guy around day 2 or 3. I was faster to unlock due to my AP advantage each cycle. I had my scholly offer in and promises already processed. He followed me a few cycles later and offered the ship and what I assumed to be promises, putting us both "listed" at moderate. Around day 5 of RS1, I dropped about 10 visits (and I had at least double the amount of AP. Since I had 80 each cycle and he could only offer 40 each cycle. I don't know if he was even doing that much. I never asked him). But it bumped him down to very low.

So at that point the opponent has to make a decision. Fight a battle that he does not have a favorable situation, or take the last day or two of RS1 to try to find another player. When RS2 first cycle processed, I signed the player without adding any more effort.

My opinion is, if I didn't drop visits in RS1 in that case, we'd have both been moderate for all of RS1 cycle by cycle, went into RS2 showing both of us at moderate and it's likely with that in front of him, he invests his entire budget and hopes for a roll. I would've had to either gone to a roll with him, or spend more money (and maybe still end up in a roll).

That's just one example. But I agree the best thing to do is NOT spend in RS1 in most cases. If you can avoid it

For D3 going after D1 pool players, agree. Any other situation, and there are *many* instances where it makes sense to spend money in RS1, and I’m not just talking about D1.

Agree 100% with this.

If they offer a scholly, don't be surprised if they make a late run. Been on both sides of it.

That's a pretty smart strat Top.

So I guess you're not just a pretty face after all.
