Hi all! Sorry for double-posting today. I'm curious as to if anyone has details on what conditions a team has to meet to move up/down prestige values. A few seasons ago, I got Vanderbilt to the tournament for the first time in many decades and it didn't change the team's prestige.

Any ideas/sources?

Answer: Go to "career" on the drop-down here and search "prestige". Sorry for the unnecessary post, but maybe this will help others when they search in the future.

Each D1 school has a base prestige. Their base prestige ticks up or down based on the team results over its previous 4 seasons. In addition, if a team produces an NBA draft pick, that will also contribute to increased prestige.

There's an old thread i can try to find that lists each team's base prestige.

yeah, that hits most of it. i guess basically, the high level is, the most recent single season is worth less than many folks would naturally think. its worth a lot, but in d1 in particular, there is a fairly long timeline of seasons that impact prestige. d2/d3 are a much shorter timeline (4 seasons vs 10?). also, conference and baseline prestige are substantial factors in d1, so perhaps those were playing a bigger role than one might think.

wins/losses and RPI matter quite a bit relative to post season, as well - some folks are surprised by how much those matter, at the higher end of post season outcomes. a final 4 with #1 rpi / #2 ranking is a lot different than a final 4 with 25 rpi and 10 losses.

Totally makes sense! Thanks for the perspective.

I thought D1 was 4 seasons and DII/DIII 10?

Maybe I am backwards.

you could be right, the whole prestige and jobs stuff got smashed together in my years away and now i confuse that crap all the time. now that i think of it... i think d2/d3 were real short term on prestige, but it had a long tail, like - infinity? it just was like a 50% scaling, 50% this season, 50% current prestige, capped at a grade increase. so like, after 4 seasons or so it basically had no impact... but technically not none. where as d1 is more like, the most recent season is worth a lot less at least.

I think D2 and D3 is also set at four seasons. I got to A- prestige very quick at Tiffin. https://www.whatifsports.com/hd/TeamProfile/History.aspx?tid=8353

From the FAQ

In DII and DIII, prestige is updated at the end of each season based on the following items:

  • Current prestige
  • Team winning percentage
  • Strength of schedule (SOS)
  • Postseason bids/wins (National Tournament is worth more than PIT)

In DI, prestige updates work a little differently. We look at the past 4 seasons and put a different weighting on each season.

i think there was a recent thread where someone told me i was crazy and the 4/10 thing was resumes not prestige and i was out voted and figured others were likely correct... but like i said, im kinda confused about the whole... situation. so i probably should shut up and say nothing on this topic. i at least 50% take back everything i said previously... :)

4 seasons for prestige sure sounds right but also feels wrong... sigh. those 3+ years off really did a number on my claim to being the #1 repository of useless HD information :(

thanks, that didn't immediately come to mind when this came up, i'll have to remember i'm all jacked up on the way all that stuff works. i figured that out last time, but it took a couple posts here to remind me :) i suppose i have been in the high d1 game too long, there's just so much of the game that i haven't touched in so long. been thinking of picking up a d2 team, perhaps - i don't know if i have it in me to actually coach, but i am pretty seriously considering trying!
