If i was to bring up a prospect when the rosters expand and add him to the 40-man will that start his "clock" or does he have to play a certain number of games? Thanks.

It will start his clock.

Major league service time has nothing to do with games played, it's the number of days the player spends on a major league roster.

Just for clarity, this only applies to the regular season in regards to service time. If you call a prospect up for the playoffs, it will not affect his service time.

So a call up during the roster expansion being roughly 30 days, is that enough time to start his service time? Will he take a ratings hit if I put him back in minors at end of season?

Sadly, this is the first time that I'm really using the extra roster space to rest some people and not fight till end of season for a playoff spot. Is it even really beneficial to bring a prospect up for big league experience during that time?

Thanks

The only downside to bringing them up is that it makes it tougher to get an extra year of arb out of the player. If you demote him after the regular season, he will not take a hit. I call up all my guys that are on the 40 every season and then demote every player that is pre arb after the regular season and have never had anyone take a demotion penalty (demoting minor leaguers to lower MiLB levels is different. They will take a hit.)

In my opinion, the benefits of bringing them up are extra playing time for developmental purposes and you make your team more competitive by adding depth.

I seem to always be confused with this and want to confirm.

From the end of the Regular Season until the last game of the world series, you can demote a pre arb AAA player (from MLB to AAA), not take a ratings hit, and not have to pay him the extra money for next year.

Is this different from the time before Spring Training starts?

If you demote someone before spring training they won’t have a ratings hit but they will still have the ML Min salary (even after demotion) if they were on the ML roster over the offseason.
