As I've done for the last couple drafts, here's my thoughts on each pick:
Pick 1.4 - OF Tim Salmon
Pick 2.1 - 2B Bobby Grich
Ugh, tough draft to get last pick in. Chance and Trout are clearly the top 2 players and Erstad was a pretty clear #3. The good news is I get to pick two in a row and probably pick early in the next few rounds. I thought about Troy Percival as the top reliever and glanced at the starting pitchers but in the end settled on the two best position players. Salmon’s 1995 is a great hitting season and Grich is by far the best 2B the Angels have.
Pick 3.1 - RP Francisco Rodriguez
Almost got Percival to fall to me but K-Rod is the clear #2 reliever. With a few starters of equal quality left, I’ll go with the reliever here and then grab my ace next.
Pick 4.1 - SP Garrett Richards
Tanana and Weaver went so it was between Richards and Messersmith. Richards has fewer innings but by quality he’s the 2nd-best SP in Angels history so I went with him.
Pick 5.1 - 3B Troy Glaus
Preferred DeCinces slightly but Glaus is a monster hitter and decent fielding at a shallow position. Thought about waiting for Figgins here to be my leadoff hitter but nobody else jumped out to me at this pick.
Pick 6.1 - SP George Brunet
This one came down to Brunet vs Nolan Ryan. Brunet again had fewer innings but I wasn’t quite sure what to make of Ryan’s crazy profile (tons of Ks and BBs) so I went with Brunet.
Pick 7.1 - RP Blake Parker
The only position player I would have considered here was Jim Edmonds but he went a couple picks ahead and I already had my sights set on Albie Pearson who I envisioned as my leadoff hitter and CF. With all the good SP gone (schwarze took Ryan with the last pick of the 6th round), I’m going to need to stock up on relievers. Parker was the best one left.
Pick 8.1 - RP Ken Tatum
Figured I could wait on my position players at this point so went with another reliever in Tatum.
Pick 9.1 - 3B/OF Tony Phillips
Schwarze snipes me, Part 1. He took Pearson in Round 8, I thought I had another couple rounds before I needed to take him. Oh well, Phillips is a fine consolation prize and can actually man centerfield with his A/B+ defense.
Pick 10.1 - RP Hoyt Wilhelm
I’ve now locked in 2B, 3B, CF, and RF. I feel like I can wait on C (catcher is a mess for the Angels), 1B, SS, and my final OF spot. Hoyt Wilhelm gives me another elite bullpen arm, gonna have to do this pitching thing the hard way.
Pick 11.1 - 1B Jason Thompson
I considered Rod Carew but once I had Phillips for leadoff, I thought the best option at 1B was to build a nice platoon. There are a couple good RH options but Thompson is the only option as a lefty that works and I’m desperate for some LH hitting.
Pick 12.1 - RP Yusmeiro Petit
Kind of in no-man’s land here. Feel like I can wait on catcher (Downing, Napoli, and Averill all similar options at the top of my list), shortstop (only Burleson is taken so still have Aybar, Simmons, and Fregosi), and my 1B/OF spots. The SP pool is depleted. Petit has 91 IP with high quality and I need both the volume and the efficiency.
Pick 13.1 - C Mike Napoli
Downing goes in the 12th so I decide it’s maybe time to grab my catcher. I took Napoli’s more expensive 2009 season in case I needed the extra PA but will almost assuredly use his 2008 season with his much better hitting.
Pick 14.1 - RP Jose Arredondo
In hindsight, this should have been my shortstop but I got greedy and thought I could wait. I did like Arredondo as the best reliever left and we were in the midst of a reliever run. Of course, this came back to bite me in the ***.
Pick 15.1 - OF Justin Upton
Schwarze snipes me, Part 2. It’s always a gamble how long you can wait on a position when you’re picking last from the 4 owners. At some point, the 4th-best player gets picked as a super-backup. I thought I could wait out the shortstop position a bit longer, expecting Simmons to be the last man standing. When he went first, I was surprised as I actually had Fregosi as my top SS choice (barely) over the other 3 and so decided I would snag him. Then schwarze just gut-punched me and took Fregosi as his 2B. That really hurt. Oh well, on to Plan B. I decided on Upton as the best-hitting corner OF option who didn’t come with terrible defense.
Pick 16.1 - IF Maicer Izturis
I went back and researched my new plan at SS and I settled on Gary Disarcina. However, he has only 441 PA so I needed some support. Grich has under 600 PA so he needs some support as well. Izturis is a great-fielding, decent-hitting options and can play 3B too in case Glaus needs a rest. I’m find waiting on Disarcina--I’d be REALLY shocked if somebody grabbed him soon--but Izturis could be in play as a utility guy or 2B. Plus, worst case, if Disarcina gets taken Izturis can man SS pretty well himself.
Pick 17.1 - SP Fred Newman
Pick 18.1 - SP Rudy May
If the last 3 rounds were an example of what happens when gambling fails, this is what it looks like when it succeeds. More than happy to get Newman and May eight to ten rounds after the top group was gone. May gives me the option for a bigger-IP season or a very nice 142 IP season if I don’t need the extra innings. And he’s a lefty, which is a rare beast for the Angels.
Pick 19.1 - C Jim Leyritz
Down to deciding what order to pick my platoon partners and bench guys. Leyritz has an A+ arm and the 2nd-best bat left (after Iannetta), plus he gives me 455 PA which lets me comfortably take the shorter-PA version of Napoli. Leyritz can also play 1B if needed, so some extra flexibility there. The only downside is he’s another RH bat, but the only LH option was Tom Satriano and he’s more than a platoon-advantage worse than Leyritz (plus the fewer PA would have made it really tight with Napoli and I certainly didn’t want to have to draft a 3rd catcher).
Pick 20.1 - RP Hansel Robles
The last good reliever over 65 IP, he should allow me to also swap Rudy May for his better-quality 142 IP season.
Pick 21.1 - 1B Steve Bilko
From the beginning I had tagged Bilko or Joe Adcock as the RH half of my 1B platoon. I went back and forth on who to take. Adcock has better defense (A/D vs C/D-) and more power, but I ended up opting for Bilko’s better OBP, ability to play (crappy) outfield and mostly his extra 100 or so PA. Teixeira is great, but after him I think Thompson/Bilko is the next best thing for 1B options.
Pick 22.1 - SS Gary Disarcina
Luckily, my Plan B didn’t get swiped. Plan C was probably Dick Schofield or something. Disarcina will play the bulk of my SS innings with Izturis backing him up.
Pick 23.1 - OF Gary Pettis
Pick 24.1 - OF Reggie Jackson
I had one LH hitter on my team to this point and only two other Switch-hitters, one of whom (Izturis) is just a backup and more of a defender. I have two ways to go with Pettis--I can take one of his A+ range seasons and he can serve primarily as a defensive replacement and pinch-runner. Or I can go with his 93-PA season where he slugs 150 points higher but his defense is only B-/B (though he’ll still be a great pinch-runner).
Jackson and Otani were the best lefty bats left. Jackson gets the nod mostly because he at least has ratings in the OF whereas Otani is purely a pinch-hitter.
Pick 25.1 - P Jim Abbott
I was a tiny bit light on innings. Could probably make it work with a reliever here instead of Abbott but will play it safe. Plus, he’s a lefty. Plus plus, it’s still amazing to me that a one-handed player had such an impressive career.
