Which pitcher for a 6 man rotation ? Topic

I am building a roster with a 6 man rotation. All will be between 140-190 IP. I am deciding between 2 SP for the last spot. 1905 Bill Bernhard or 1909 Deacon Phillippe. Which will be more beneficial to my team over a full season ? This is a regular, 162 game sim league. Ballpark will be Shibe Park. Thanks.

First of all, keep in mind that it is a hard question to answer or give advice for without knowing more about the rest of your staff.

It is important to realize that you don't need more than around 1300 (many here that are experts on managing pitching go as low as 1200) IP for the season, utilizing also your two AAA pitchers as mop ups or spot starters and maybe even a start by a 200K pitcher before dumping him on the WW.

But assuming you have a decent bullpen and are not overbuying IP all told:

140 times 6 = 840 IP which is a bit low for a rotation, as 900 is probably a little safer. Again, that depends on the rest of the staff.
190 times 6 = 1140 which is high, but might work and could allow you to get low IP, high quality relievers, except that you might need to allow some of your starters to relieve sometimes, which will also take innings and pitches (fatigue is based on pitch allotment for the season remember - see the post by Winnetka1 on the thread called "pitch count" in this forum from just the past day or so, where he pastes Elbirdo's classic formula for calculating pitches for the year.

Assuming you are somewhere in between on total IP for the rotation, it still depends:

Bernhard has 40 more IP than Phillippe - do you need those IP? Phillippe's WHIP is much better. Both seem to have average to high OAV but Bernhard especially. But Bernhard has almost 8 IP/G and Philippe only 6 IP/G, in other words you need bullpen help when Phillippe is on the mound to cover 3 innings on average most of the time, but Bernhard can pitch complete games, or need only an inning of relief. But Phillipe is much the better pitcher for quality.

The park is pretty neutral, but lends itself to singles, meaning higher averages, which could hurt Bernhard.

In other words, without knowing more: Phillipe is a much better quality pitcher. Bernhard has the advantage of more overall innings he can pitch plus he can go later into the games, so if you want to spend less on relievers he could be the wiser choice, but he won't give you the same quality as Phillippe who, however, will need to be relieved after 6-7 innings (think Pedro Martinez, though not quite that quality, but you get the idea - great pitcher, won't complete the game most of the time).
