What you look for in a player Topic

Just looking for some advice on what you look for in a player and how you go about selecting a team. I've read the forums and haven't really seen this posted. What makes a player a good value ? What key stats do you look for ? What stats are most important for both hitters and pitchers. Are u dividing the salary per plate appearance or inning pitched ? Just trying to get an idea there are so many stats available and it can get overwhelming. Looking for advice on where to start. For the time being these teams will be 80M open league teams so tailor your advice to those.

$/PA and $/IP are very important stats
Also critical (and be sure you are looking at the normalized versions with the + and #, not the raw numbers):
For hitters
AVG
OBP
SLG
2B/100
3B/100
HR/100
SB success rate
Fielding
Range (except for catchers)
Catcher Arm

For pitchers (same advice re: + and # stats):
OAV
WHIP
HR/9
BB/9
K/9 (some will argue this is important, others think less so)
IP/162 and IP/G
ERA
ERC

Stuff that is utterly irrelevant: runs, RBI, wins, losses, saves, complete games, shutouts....

I want production. I also am paying for defense, or the lack of...

Compare players based on xbh/100PA, BB/SO ratio, defensive range(RRF), and $/PA. Identify value. The search engine is your weapon.

Open leagues at $80M do not provide you with sufficient funds to build lights out teams. You have to find value, and make sacrifices. You have to find creative ways to cut corners that do minimal damage, and insert players that provide the biggest bang for the buck. There is no single right answer.

I would suggest starting with a park that is not extreme. Use an even $40M on both pitching and offense. Then go back through your lineup, try to improve each position with the funds available. It will give you an opportunity to tailor your team to your park. Expect an amount of trial and error in this process until you find something that clicks. This ain't plug and play. Try to embrace that. Team building is fun and challenging.
