I use half minutes for HCP relative to the base defense - for most teams, that’s 20 for flex and zone, 10 for press. For Jackson State, I’m experimenting with lower IQ minutes, I have them at 16/16/8, starting the second season of that now (at low D1 where I’m taking more guys who need more growth than my high D1 teams). 10 minutes gets most guys from 0 to C/C+ in the first season, to B- by the end of the second season, to B/B+ by the third, and most get to A- as seniors. I’ve found that to be enough for what I want the HCP to do, give me more possessions without noticeably impacting fouls or OFG%.
