Yo! Newbie here. I'm sure this Q has been Q'd before, but couldn't find it immediately. Forgive me, forgive me, a thousand pardons, a thousand pardons.

I'm in D3. Recently lost 76-70 in a game where I shot 15-20 free throws and they shot 35-40. We both play Motion/Man to Man offenses, I've got my fellas practicing both offense and defense for 25 minutes a practice...

Any advice on how to limit fouls? Are my dudes tired? Not athletic enough? Dumb as rocks? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you're generalizing a little bit or if this game took place under a different alias. Without the specific game, it's hard to answer those questions fully. However...

Not athletic enough is a factor. Your team has well below-par athleticism relative to established human-coached D3 teams. Luck can also be a factor. Sometimes just generally not quite good enough also matters a lot. Against Eastern Oregon - the closest game to this description I see - you had 17 chances at the line and they had 34. So that looks really bad, but in fact they shot 10 free throws in the last minute of the game when your guys started fouling. You have to look at those late-and-close intentional fouls before you get too worked up over free throw disparities.

Foul disparities are, generally speaking, mostly a factor of athleticism rating, defensive rating, and IQ. Secondary factors include types of set (press fouls more than zone, for example), fatigue (can be more than a secondary factor when it’s a real problem, but it’s only a real problem for a minute or two at a time in most games), and defensive setting (minor, and speculative - the idea that negative settings foul more may just be a forum fact).

Yes, its Ath/Spd/Fatigue but also luck!

I played 3 games against MSU this year with my Illinois team, all were? slowdown vs normal and I played -2 or -3 in all of them (he ranged a little more and has a halftime adjustment on). The FT margins were:

Road: -21
Neutral: -15
Neutral: -8

Varying a ton obviously.
