Maximum in game pitch count Topic

As I was getting to the end of the season in Ryno’s $70m Challenge, I had clinched the division so I decided to rest all my front line pitchers. By G160, I decided to use 2011 Brian Matusz (and his 283K salary for nearly 50 IP) to start the last three games. While he was surprisingly effective in a 3-1 lose in G160, he naturally got blown out of the water 40-1 & 49-10 in G161-162. What was odd about this is that while his pitch count for each game was listed at 255, he went from 939 to 1,603 (a difference of 664) in his yearly total over the last two games. So obviously he threw more than the listed amount, which I always thought was an upper limit before Sparky pulled a pitcher. Guess you learn something every day...

That strikes me as a display issue based on things being stored in base 2. I'd guess there's something in the coding that prevents the pitch count from going to nine characters in base 2 and 255 is the largest number you can have before adding that ninth digit.

That is correct, they have a display limit of 255, similar to why $255m is the highest cap allowed. They can throw significantly more than 255 pitches, but it will only show 255. You’ll need to look at game logs and pitch counts to see what they actually threw if more than 255.

Or it could be hexadecimal that is limited to two characters (FF as 255). IT's something I hadn't thought about previously; always assumed it was a limit for the pitcher and not a display issue.
