Pitcher development in Minor Leagues Topic

If you forsee a pitcher being a ML starter, is it better for his development to have him as a starter in the MiL or as a reliever and get as many appearances as possible?

From reading these forums, it seems that consensus is any prospect you want to play in the ML should be getting in as many Games (spring training also) as possible (not Innings). I've started to do this as well.

The key to developing players is have him play (doesnt matter where or how) where your best coaches are (likely aaa). It does not matter if they struggle you just want the most playing time (at 100%) with the best coaches. You would not believe how many people think players need to be in lower levels or think minor league stats mean anything. I only would keep a top prospect out of aaa if I could not find enough playing time there.

I keep it very simple with developing my prospects. For a SP, I throw him in the rotation and let him pitch every 5 days. For a RP, I throw them in as a SuA. I've read the folks who will put a clear SP prospect in relief to maximize appearances.. I'd imagine it works, but I've never had an issue developing a SP by giving him 30 starts a year at each level.
