Am I supposed to do something about this? Topic

I'm in Phelan at a D2 school in Oklahoma.

Its period 1 of recruiting, before recruits are allowed to sign. There is a player on my board that has had me, and a D3 on him. This most recent cycle a D2 school from over 2,000 miles away shows up.

Now I suppose there are ways for this to be possible, but it seems that he most likely got info about this recruit from another account, his own or a perhaps a friend. Maybe he used the camps though? I'm not really sure how those work honestly.

Am I supposed to report this or just let it go and assume he is pursuing this player legally? Just seemed odd to me and caught my attention. Thoughts?

The faraway school could have been fishing for players with a far from home preference. That pref can be powerful.

i wouldn't sweat it unless you have more evidence.

Need more info on this guy to be able to make a judgment here. That being said, I regularly recruit guys from ridiculously far away. I have 4 seasons at Bloomfield (NJ) which is D2 and I've signed 3 guys from California, 1 from Nevada, and 1 from Calgary. So I'm hitting 2k about once per year. Some of these guys had far away from home, but most of them I targetted because my location out east is ridiculously impossible to recruit good players out of because the D1 recruiting environment seems to be insanely competitive. Coaches I know are high-quality coaches drop down and steal the most unsignable D1 guys consistently. There are reasons for people to recruit at a high distance. I'd ask the coach after recruiting is done.

And it sounds like he hasn't even tried to sign the player yet....I've probably put an AP on over 100 domestic players over 1500 miles away in my career...

Agree with everyone here. I don't think anything fishy is going on.

Yeah, distance alone isn't fishy.

Ah I see, I didn't realize people recruited that far away, nor did I consider the long distance preference as a strategy.

This particular player doesn't have the long distance preference though. Wants to play and wants success. Everything else is no preference.

Not too worried about it, either way it sounds like he could be cheating and we would never really have "proof" or "evidence" of it and he would be able to get away with it consistently. I'll just carry along with my business and focus on my school.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Agree with everyone else on here. That's one of the differences I've found since returning to the game after the recruiting changes. I've seen good DII and DIII coaches show up on recruits far from them (usually after the first cycle, not exclusively) because there is value in just having your name on as many recruits as possible and then making a decision who to target. This strategy certainly makes sense, and if the new school is actually far away, it wouldn't be smart to spent money on the recruit. But I wouldn't bat an eye seeing coaches show up anywhere.

i'll mention because you are in OK, if you are talking about a recruit in TX, some folks look there especially because it is a juco-rich state. there's a few places like texas where there's valid reasons folks could strategically target them - plus there are a bunch of weird approaches in recruiting in general that people do, that aren't necessarily super sensible or obvious to an outsider, but aren't untoward either. so i would say there just isn't enough to go on, but if you notice a pattern of it and can't come up with a plausible explanation on your own, you can always sitemail the other coach and ask them about it. most people will take that in a friendly way if you approach it that way, and even if they are breaking the rules, it could be a casual coach who doesn't come to these forums, and where making them aware of it may be enough to put an end to it. i'd always start there, i've found most people in this game to be approachable.
