Will he sign? Trade him? Topic

We're in spring training. My stud pitcher's contact expires after this season. When I look to sign him now, his notes read "With free-agency looming, I'm going to at least see what the market has to offer. Let's talk again in the offseason."

Does this mean he's not gonna sign at all and that I should trade him? Or is there a chance if I throw offers at him that he'll sign? And if I do trade him, will he be more likely to sign with the team that trades for him, or are they screwed after the season too?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how to do that. I know how to copy him to the clipboard, and I see where it says "paste WIS clipboard." But nothing happens when I do that.

A player with an 85 overall rating, and a 61 patience rating is extremely unlikely to re-sign.

I have to agree.

Have we seen any situation where a player like that does resign? Would winning a WS influence the decision?

Far as I know it'll be entirely based on his Patience rating and Overall, which will likely determine that he's a Type A free agent. Nothing is guaranteed, but here's how I see this:

He's 95%-99% likely not going to re-sign if you throw any offers at him during this season.

If you trade him, same percentage he's still going to go to free agency after the season.

If you hold onto him, same percentage he miiiiiiiiight be willing to re-sign with you next season before free agency starts. Otherwise he walks and you get Type A compensation. Or you can try to re-sign him on the open market.

Essentially, this season you have to decide which way you'll get the most value for him.

I'd trade em unless you are making a playoff run. You'd probably get a pretty good return for a pitcher like that.

Could have had him another year if you arb'd him again or 2 if you used the loophole that was available back then.

Not only that, but you should have offered him a 5 year contract... players will take longer offers at the same rate.

I did not even look at the contract length good catch. I just saw he was 28 and thought why was he available already.

I thought signing him rather than arbing him again was the right thing to do. I didn't realize he'd bolt after one contract. Didn't know about the five year thing or whatever the loophole was back then. Definitely not a playoff team so I'll have to look for offers. Thanks guys.
